A new library in my area...love it!

I mentioned in a post the other day that one of our local libraries had completed a new building and that I had visited and taken a few pictures.  I used to volunteer at this library a few years back and helped out with processing new materials.  I did enjoy that work.  Anyway, this library had outgrown their facility and struggled to have enough room for not only materials, but also for study areas, meeting spaces, and new programs they wanted to implement.  On November 1st, they opened their new space.  Here is the new Cedar Park Public Library.  I loved it!

This sign lights up at night.

The front entrance.  They now have two stories, two screened porches, and a bunch of other fun spaces.  Just a lot more room for everything.

This 'wall of wood' adjoins the staircase to the second floor.  It was created with wood from trees that were cut down as construction of the new facility progressed.  I think it's composed of oak, pecan, and other types of trees.  There is a plaque by it explaining how the wood was 'harvested' and the wall designed.

I said above that there were a bunch of special spaces.  One of these is an adult 'reading room' where patrons can sit in comfort and quiet and read.  I couldn't take a shot of the whole room because someone was using the room just as it was meant.

This sculpture was near the front entrance at the previous library and had been there for 20 years or so.  I had shown a picture of it before here on the blog and mentioned how kids really enjoyed playing around it and climbing over it.  I was so happy to see it had been moved to the new library and it now resides in the outside children's area that is located behind the kids area of the library.  Again, I had to wait until one little boy was through climbing in order to take the picture.  He was having a fun, fun time!

-------------------------------------------------------

Libraries have changed a lot over the years.  Remember when one was 'shushed' and had to be very, very quiet?  These days, libraries not only have computers that can be used by patrons, there are what's called 'makerspace' rooms where craft events are held and people are invited to come and 'create'.  Book discussions still occur, though I have noticed that more libraries are having sort of 'generic' book groups.  Some libraries even just invite people to come read together - silently.  Interesting.  There are knitting groups and crochet groups, movies to be watched, special speakers and, yes, storytimes.  Library staff helps patrons a lot with all kinds of information.

I don't think the time of 'Public Libraries' is even close to coming to an end.  I certainly hope not.  Hope you enjoyed this little tour.  Do you visit your area libraries still?  Do you love them?

  2. The new Cedar Park Public Library sounds amazing! The additional space and new features like the adult reading room and screened porches must make it a wonderful place to visit.

I love that they preserved the sculpture for the children's area. It's great to see how libraries are evolving to become more community-focused and interactive. I'll have to check it out next time I'm in the area!

    1. I agree that it's nice to libraries still being important to communities. I feel that a lot of people who don't visit them are unaware of all the benefits they provide. Thanks for coming by!

  3. Yes, I still use my library. Perhaps not as much I used to before Covid but I still like to pop in from time to time. They have a thriving mother and baby/toddler group and loads of other things going on. Quite different to when I was a child. LOL!

    1. I do understand what you are saying, Cath. And I'm very glad that your local library has great programs for the kids and the mother/baby group. I will admit that read less book in print as opposed to my Kindle, but I still go and check things out.

  4. Wow, what a beautiful building! When we were looking for a house several years ago, one thing I had in the back of my mind was that I wanted it to be in an area with a good library system, and thankfully I got it! I utilize it a lot for books for Henry - they have a great Youth Services room with of course lots of books but also lots of play spaces.

    1. Oh, I'm happy to hear that, Angela. How fun for both you and Henry! This library I mentioned above has a wonderful indoor kids play area and also an outdoor play area. The kids I saw were having a blast!

  5. Wow! What a lovely library. I like the idea of the wood wall, as well as the screened porches. What a great idea! I visit my library in Newport every now and then. I really try to read from my own shelves (which are overflowing, thanks to my voracious reading mother!), but it's fun to pick up some books from the library, too.

    1. I understand what you're saying, Les. And I know your shelves are full of books to try. But...visiting the library is fun. And not everyone has as many books as many of us do. I know your Mom does keep the shelves full - ha!

  6. What a wonderful new library! Yay!! What a great space with much to enjoy. I love libraries and continue to get most of my books from the library ... and we have to drive like 30+ minutes to get to the branch we go to. Hope you love it.

    1. Susan, I will tell you that it takes me about 30 minutes to get to this library from my house. I'm familiar with a bunch of local libraries though and enjoy visiting several from time to time. One day I may get back to volunteering at a local library. This one isn't accepting new volunteers right now. I keep checking - ha!

  7. This looks like a wonderful library! Mine remodeled and put the kids section right smack in the middle with three open floors so all you hear are kids yammering on. I love to see kids reading but there are no quiet spaces. In my University Library they put a coffee shop in the middle! The espresso machines and grinders are so loud and burnt toast permeates the space. Does anything think about these things?

    1. Ti, you made me laugh a lot! Kids' playspace or coffee shop - lots different than the librarian with her fingers to her lips shushing people. Part of the reason I like that 'reading room' concept. If you want a quiet space - there you go.
