'Waiting on Wednesday' is an event where I feature an upcoming book that I am extra excited about. I love doing this, letting the 'word' spread about authors and series that I enjoy. Hope you'll stop by often and see what I'm 'waiting' on!
Today's book is one that I selected mostly because of the cover. Isn't that a fun, historical beachy scene? Now, what I will say is that those girls don't have sunscreen on - not invented yet. However, they are at least partially under an umbrella and enjoying their books. I have not yet read anything by Martha Hall Kelly, but I have certainly heard about several of her historical fiction books. I think I might have a copy of Lilac Girls. I do know that several friends have enjoyed her writing. This one is set in 1942, WWII era, and also in 2016. I see these girls and think about my mother. She would have been about their age at that same time. I look forward to this one and ask, have you read any books by Martha Hall Kelly? Did you like them? Or have you visited Martha's Vineyard? I have not. What do you think? Interesting?
The Martha's Vineyard Beach and Book Club
Publication Date: May 27th
Two sisters living on Martha’s Vineyard during World War II find hope in the power of storytelling when they start a wartime book club for women in this spectacular novel inspired by true events, from the New York Times bestselling author of Lilac Girls.
2016: Thirty-four-year-old Mari Starwood is still grieving after her mother’s death as she travels to the storied island of Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts. She’s come all the way from California with nothing but a name on a piece of paper: Elizabeth Devereaux, the famous but reclusive Vineyard painter. When Mari makes it to Mrs. Devereaux’s stunning waterfront farm under the guise of taking a painting class with her, Mrs. Devereaux begins to tell her the story of the Smith sisters, who once lived there. As the tale unfolds, Mari is shocked to learn that her relationship to this island runs deeper than she ever thought possible.
1942: The Smith girls—nineteen-year-old aspiring writer Cadence and sixteen-year-old war-obsessed Briar—are faced with the impossible task of holding their failing family farm together during World War II as the U.S. Army arrives on Martha’s Vineyard. When Briar spots German U-boats lurking off the island’s shores, and Cadence falls into an unlikely romance with a sworn enemy, their quiet lives are officially upended. In an attempt at normalcy, Cadence and her best friend, Bess, start a book club, which grows both in members and influence as they connect with a fabulous New York publisher who could make all of Cadence’s dreams come true. But all that is put at risk by a mysterious man who washes ashore—and whispers of a spy in their midst. Who in their tight-knit island community can they trust? Could this little book club change the course of the war . . . before it’s too late?
Right now, I'm on the lookout for books like this one that look to be light reads. I've never been to Martha's Vineyard, but I've been many, many times to beaches along the Texas Gulf Coast. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteDeb, the beach does seem to be involved in this new book. Hope this would work for you if you try it. Yes, we've been to the Texas beaches many times as well. I'm not a big fan of sand though. Ha!
DeleteI love that cover! And I would love to go to Martha's Vineyard someday. :D
ReplyDeleteLark, the cover definitely caught my eye. Loved the girl who had socks on with her bathing suit and shoes - ha!
DeleteThat cover is amazing! I do love a WWII historical fiction novel.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the cover, Angela. Definitely an eye catcher!
DeleteI've never been to Martha's Vineyard, but spent most of my youth on the beach in Southern California (specifically, Del Mar). The only novel of Kelly's that I've read is Lilac Girls. I thought the audio was good, but it's not one that I loved. I'll wait to read the reviews for this new book.
ReplyDeleteLes, I'm going to try to read this one after it comes out. Might think about the audio as well depending on who is the narrator. I checked and I do have Lilac Girls. Need to try that one too.
DeleteSadly I've not been to Martha's Vineyard. I wish I were one of these brave people who take off on holidays on their own, but sadly I'm not or I would get over to the US and tour some of these wonderful places. I love the sound of this book though, always love a character driven historical, 'secrets' sort of a yarn. Will wait for it along with you, Kay.
ReplyDeleteCath, I haven't been to your part of the world either. Maybe one day or maybe not. Planning on reading this one after it comes out and I'll share my thoughts. I suspect you get a few 'virtual' tours through blogging. Not exactly the same, still...:-)
DeleteI haven't read anything by Kelly, but I've definitely been tempted to. This one sounds like a good place to start. Any book about books is bound to grab my attention!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. I'm definitely going to try it and will see how it goes.
DeleteI also haven't read the author but would definitely give this a read!
ReplyDeleteMary
Mary, glad to hear it 'spoke' to you as well.
DeleteGreat choice, Kay! Definitely one that I'd like to read!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a bunch of us will possibly try this one. Great!
DeleteI recently added this book to my tbr! The cover caught my eye and the description sounds appealing, too. I've never read the author and have also never been to Martha's Vineyard, but I do love Cape Cod and many other New England beaches.
ReplyDeleteJoAnn, glad to hear that this cover and book appealed to you too. Based on the comments here, I think that many will try this one.
DeleteI am not familiar with this author, but I like the premise. I do hope you share your thoughts on the book if you read it as that could give me a push to try it out.
ReplyDeleteTracy, I do plan to try this one in the next few weeks. And I will definitely share my thoughts. :-)
DeleteAuthor is new to me. Unlikely to ever go to Martha’s Vineyard but certainly like to read about the place.
ReplyDeleteMystica, nice to see a comment from you! Hope you might get to try this one as well.
DeleteI have this author on my TBR but have yet to read anything by her. This looks really good and I love the cover!
ReplyDeleteYou asked about reading the Donna Andrews series in order and you can jump in anywhere - it just may take a bit to get used to everyone. I jumped in about 5 or 6 books ago and have figured out who everyone is and am going back to the beginning to get caught up.
Thanks for the info about the Donna Andrews series. I have read maybe the first 3 books or maybe the first 2. So many of them now. May just jump in to the current. We'll see.
DeleteI have not read Kelly but this one sounds pretty good. I have been to Martha's Vineyard maybe twice years ago to visit a friend and it is wonderful. Reminds me of a summer day at the beach -- a beautiful island. And a book club there during the war would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree that this book sounds interesting. I will admit that I am being a little picky about WWII historical books to read - not that I don't like them, but that theme has been used a lot. The cover and a book club did it for me. Nice that you've gotten to visit that area. Maybe one day for me.
DeleteSounds like a good summer beach read. I know a few in our book club that would like this WWII book...
ReplyDeleteAnother one that I'm definitely looking forward to reading before long. And I agree about others in the book club.
