2015 and fitness

I wanted to write one more "introductory" post before I feel like I've settled back into the blogging deal.  And this is mostly for myself.  To put something "on paper" as it were.

2015 needs to be the year that I seriously take myself down the road to better health, mentally and physically.  No, I don't have any huge issues other than being way too overweight.  I did a few years ago and many of you were around when I had ovarian cancer.  Gratefully, that has not recurred and I'm 6-1/2 years out.  That being said, I don't want to take anything for granted.  I have done better some years on the fitness goal, working with a trainer and getting stronger, and some years have been rather sluggish.  2015 is not going to be sluggish.

I know there are some groups out there in the blogging world that are about moving more and fitness goals and I may decide to join at some point.  Right now, I just want to throw my goals out there and say, here's my plan.

Eat a little less and notice more about what I eat and how I feel when I do it.

Move more.  Much more.  Building up a little at a time.  Walking.  Strength training (I have the equipment and the know how).  Yoga (the ending part with the meditation is the best).  Oh and rowing.  I have a rowing machine here at home.  I haven't used it as much as I would like.  Rowing is soothing and kind of zen for me.

That's it.  All my goals.  I'll try to mention my progress now and then.  Audiobooks will be my friend. And good rollicking music.  I've joined a yoga class that starts next week.  I've been away from it too long and decided to try a new yoga place and take their beginner's class.  My body feels very creaky in many ways, so I think that easing back into the stretching and poses will be good.

Thanks for listening and good luck with any goals or aims that you have set for yourselves as this year, 2015 (isn't it amazing that it's 2015?) gets rolling.

  1. Good luck! My goal was to lose 30 pounds last year and I only managed 5. Guess 30 will be my new goal (since that's what it has to be for me to lose 5 ;)). I've never done a yoga class but have done videos and really liked them. Probably need that soothing more than ever these days so I should check some out of the library.
6 1/2 years cancer free is a great thing to be thankful for :)

    1. Stacy, I find yoga very soothing. I can really get that whole meditation thing at the end - if I don't almost fall asleep. LOL

  2. I've already started moving around more, and I have to admit that the rowing machine sounds zen to me as well. Don't have a clue where I'd put one, though!

    1. Cathy, a rowing machine does take up quite a bit of space. It's very long. Ours is in the master bedroom in that part that is supposed to be a sitting area.

  3. Good luck with your goal, Kay. It's funny you posted this because I am in the same boat. I had begun exercising regularly in June of last year but had to stop because of the surgery. Now that I have my doctor's okay, I've started up again (as of today, in fact). I haven't joined any of the fitness challenge groups out there, but who knows? Like you, I also want to eat better this year. We can do this!

Congratulations on being cancer free for so many years! That is definitely a good sign. :-)

  4. Good goal, Kay. I really started focusing on fitness in August. I find it helps energize me and keeps me positive...mostly I have been riding my bike (my husband rides with me so it is also a good time to connect with him) and I have a goal of riding a century ride...hopefully in August up in Bend, OR. They do multiple long rides to raise money for cancer research...and so not only am I getting in shape, but I like the idea of doing something good for the world at the same time.

    1. We have a lot of bike riders in our part of the world. And I've been to Bend. A lot of beautiful country for long rides. What a good idea to give back and also give to yourself for better health.

  5. Good luck, Kay! I started taking longer, faster walks this year (with audiobooks, of course) and have dreaded being indoors all winter. Luckily, our plans have changed so I will be in a warmer climate most of the winter - and can walk daily and will bike regularly, too.

I cook healthy meals most of the, but need to be more mindful of portions... and snacking. When I did Weight Watchers years ago, writing down what I ate helped keep me accountable. I'm considering starting that again.

  6. Back when I did WW, the best lessons I learned were drink lots of water - sometimes it helps having a container that you've measured so you know how much you get - and portions. In those days for example - 1 t. butter was 1 point. When one doesn't measure, you can easily put a T. or more on a piece of toast. I still measure almost everything. Is the rowing machine tough on your knees?

    1. I don't seem to have a knee issue with the rower. It does work lots of muscles and people with back problems would need to be careful. You have to have good form. Drinking lots of water is a good tip and I have to remind myself of that. It tastes better if I throw a little lemon or lime in there.

  7. Good for you Kay!! I'm doing FitReaders this year, after loving BookBlogWalkers last year ... I just walk, I eased back in to exercise after not being allowed to do anything for 12 months with surgery and a heart condition but I find it very motivating to 'check-in' each week or so. And I love audiobooks, they sure help turn things I find a real chore into an almost pleasurable experience lol. Love your attitude, not taking anything for granted is excellent motivation :)

    1. Fitreaders is the group that I've see on a few blogs, yours included. I'm thinking about joining after a while. We'll see. Thanks for stopping by and good luck to you as well in your fitness quest. :-)

  8. You can do it! I made walking a priority a year and a half ago and now find it recharges my batteries.

  9. Good for you!! I'm really trying to be more mindful as well--I've actually started tracking what I eat in MyFitnessPal. I hate counting calories but really it just makes me notice how much I snack. A LOT.

And yes audiobooks!! Though I love Lady Gaga radio on Pandora. ;)

    1. Hey Lady Gaga radio would be good for the strength training time. I can't listen to a book while I'm using resistance bands or lifting weights.

  10. Wishing you much success with your goal! I have been trying to be much more mindful of my health after last Spring when my blood pressure was getting too high. As of last year I've managed to drop a few pounds and just feel better. One thing that has worked for me is the Fitbit. Do you use a fitness tracker? I thought for sure that was not going to mean a thing but I got it last Spring and still wear it daily and look at it to see if I can get a bit more steps here and there. Some weeks are better than others but every bit helps! We can do it! :)
