Join me at Sacred Grounds...

I wanted to do one more post about our trip to Ruidoso.  And this one I am linking to Weekend Cooking at Beth Fish Reads.  If you are ever in Ruidoso, you must stop by this great little coffee/sandwich shop, Sacred Grounds.  They have a new location since we visited last and a much bigger setup.  It's really beautiful.  Here's the front:

Here is a picture of the inside.  There are lots of things for sale, in addition to tasty treats.  Bags of coffee and tea, cups and gifts of all kinds.  The coffee is great.  I'm sure the tea is too, but I haven't tried it yet.

And then there are the decks outside.  This shop backs up to a creek, which was merrily burbling along when we were there.  This area has had much more rain this year than in years past.  There are covered decks and then you can go down and there are more decks and then down again with more and more.  It's just lovely.  Here's a shot looking down at the creek:

We had a great lunch there one day.  I had a half turkey sandwich with some great veggies on some kind of crusty whole-grain bread.  The soup is tomato basil - delish!  A couple of slices of apple and the cookie was an oatmeal-cranberry.  Very yummy!

Later in the week, we went back for gelato.  Here's my tiramisu gelato.  It was great, but I will admit that I was tempted to get another cookie or a scone or a cinnamon roll.

In fact, before we left, we went back again one evening and got more gelato - mine was Key Lime Pie flavor - and I also got a new coffee mug and some pecan flavored coffee.  I haven't tried the coffee yet, but the mug is just about perfect.

So, if you wish to visit Ruidoso, winter (there's skiing near) or summer, stop by Sacred Grounds for a little of this and a little of that.  You won't be sorry.  I promise.

  1. I like your new mug, and the gelato. And the lunch and all of it! I would most certainly stop there for a lunch if we visit that area.
The scenery is so pretty. Looks like a great time.

  4. I've never really thought of New Mexico as a tourist destination but it sounds like you've had such a good time and found some really interesting places! Your lunch looks delicious and that pecan coffee sounds like a heavenly combination!

    1. I still haven't tried the pecan coffee, but I love pecan anything. I'm betting I'll like it. Ruidoso is in southern New Mexico. It's really the closest mountain area to Austin. Closer than Colorado or the Ozarks in Arkansas. Lots of Texas tourists there.

    1. I know. I debated, but decided I could get the other choices elsewhere and there aren't that many places where we can get gelato.

  7. I wouldn't have thought it would get cold enough to snow down there! I've never been, though, so I'm just picturing desert. Though...I am thinking it would be a great excuse to drive through Roswell. ;)

The gelato looks delicious (it all does, but my heart always goes for ice cream). Your picture of the pined woods has me wanting to do a bit more research about Ruidoso for when the girls are older!

    1. It does get cold enough to snow and the ski area is called Ski Apache. Ruidoso is at 6,900 ft. Just enough to make your breathing a little tricky for the first couple of days. Cloudcroft, which is not too far away, is over 9,000 ft. Has one of the highest golf courses in the world.

You should think about coming to this area, Trish. It's about 600 miles from Austin, but is likely the closest 'real' mountains to us. And, yes, the desert is very close. White Sands is about an hour away.

  13. Will have to rethink Ruidoso. We used to take the kids skiing there many years ago and I don't remember much being there other than Holiday Inns and skiing. Snow skiing that is. Will have to think about going out there again.

    1. Well, we're at about 500 feet here in the Austin area. Makes 6900 feet feel quite high - oxygen wise anyway. :-)

  16. This looks like such a lovely place and I love all the decks overlooking the creek. I'm saving this post for future reference. Might be a great place to visit when we're retired and traveling around the country in our trailer! :)

    1. It's a lovely area. You can go higher into the mountains to Cloudcroft and then you can go down and visit Alamagordo and White Sands. Or back toward Texas and see Roswell - alien invasion central. LOL

  18. This sounds and looks delicious! But where exactly is Ruidoso? I've never heard of it.

BTW, a restaurant review is a great idea for Weekend Cooking!
