R.I.P. X

This is a challenge that I have meant to participate in for years and years.  No, I don't do challenges.  But this one - yep, right up my alley.  What am I talking about and yes, I know I'm coming to it a little late - Readers Imbibing Peril.  It has been hosted by Carl at Stainless Steel Droppings in the past.  This year, it is hosted by Andi and Heather at The Estella Society.

The artwork in the image is used with permission from Abigail Larson.

What is R.I.P.?  Well, it's a chance to read or watch or listen to stories from the beginning of September to the end of October.  These stories might fall into these categories:

Mystery
Suspense
Thriller
Dark Fantasy
Gothic
Horror
Supernatural

Pretty much most of what I read anyway.  See?  Perfect for me and I am always even more drawn to books such as this in the fall, especially in October.

There are levels to participate in and I am choosing Peril the First.  This involves reading four books that fit the categories above.  I think that will be a slam dunk for me.  In fact, 3 of the 4 books I've already read in September would fit.

I did a quick run around my bookshelves and picked a few more to perhaps try.  And these don't count what's on my Kindle.  Here's a few that would work:

Probably a little ambitious, but this just gives an idea of what stories are floating around in my sphere right now.  And I did put 2 movie sets here in case.  There is also a Peril On The Screen - movies or TV shows that would fit.  I think that Alfred Hitchcock (by the way this set includes Rear Window, Vertigo, North By Northwest, Psycho and The Birds) and The Dragon Tattoo Trilogy are perfect.  Have you seen any of those?  Or have you read any of the books in the picture (I think you can make it bigger by clicking on it)?

I know I'll have a good time.  Are you joining in on this fall challenge?

  1. I've had a lot of R.I.P.X posts come through my reader the past week or so. I don't join in but hope you have a lot of fun with it. Good luck!

  2. I don't do challenges any more, but this sounds like fun...and my usual reading, too. Thanks! And thanks for visiting my blog.

    1. Laurel, I am not at all a challenge person, but this one seems a shoo-in.

  3. I haven't officially signed up but I should. I have Dracula and Salem's Lot on my list for October and can surely squeeze in others. I wonder if X-Files would count for on the screen...we are currently binge watching it at home.

    Enjoy!! Tis the season! :)

    1. OK, I want to join in on your Salem's Lot read. It's the first King book I read back in the dark ages, also known as my college years. I think it was maybe 1977 or 1978? And, yes, I would think that X-Files would be just fine for the screen. You know, I never watched it. I should think about it.

  4. Your movie choices are totally what I feel like watching right now!
Welcome!! I have been doing this challenge for a few years. It's really the only one I do because I have no problem being a success as it!

    1. Thanks, Ti! I'm not sure why I haven't participated before, but here I am now. And you never know - I like watching spooky things at this time of year. Maybe I'll do a bit of Stephen King as well.

  8. This is always a fun challenge. I haven't done it for a few years, but when I did, I had a good time. Carl is a great challenge host. Have fun with it!

  9. Glad you're doing this too. I've read A Game For All the Family, which I thought was a cleverly complicated book of stories within stories. But I didn't find it chilling or scary. It's a bit too contrived for me and very long-winded which I thought made it lose tension - rather disappointing overall. I wrote about it on my blog - http://www.booksplease.org/2015/06/18/a-game-for-all-the-family-by-sophie-hannah/ - if you'd like to see it. It is an extraordinary and weird book. I'll be interested to see what you think of it.

I'd like to read In Bitter Chill - I read Sarah Ward's blog - Crimepieces.

    1. Thanks for sharing about the Sophie Hannah book, Margaret. I know I read what you thought on your blog, but I'll refresh my memory. Yes, I've wanted to read In Bitter Chill and look forward to it. And I read her blog too.

  10. I did this challenge a couple of times when run by Carl and had fun. I totally blanked on it this year though until I saw the posts coming in. I just love Hitchcock movies, and have seen most of them. The ones you named are awesome. Dragon Tattoo series I am hesitant about as I mentioned somewhere, here?, recently that I am nervous of the very graphic revenge scenes as portrayed in the movie (only heard about it, didn't see it). Perhaps the quality of the rest of the book will draw me in anyway.

So good luck with this! I too am a mostly mystery type reader and would have had no trouble with this one. I think though I will sit it out and read all the fun posts that come my way about it :) Can't wait for more new to me titles!

    1. Yes, the Dragon Tattoo books are a little graphic. I know you've kind of stepped away from that and so you might want to give them a pass. Getting new suggestions is a big plus, isn't it? :-)

    2. I'm with Rita. I wouldn't touch those books with a ten foot pole! (hey, how come no one says that anymore? i love that saying.)

  12. Even though I'm not certain I'll participate, I have high hopes. I even want to try the read-along for The Quick, which I abandoned when I received the review copy. But, perhaps it will go better with fellow readers/discussion as Estella Society is hosting. At any rate, it's always fun to cull one's bookshelves for possible titles. It's always fun to jump into fall with an eerie book or two.

Thank you, Kay, for your sweet, sweet comment on my blog just recently. xoxoxo

  13. That's what I said to myself too, Kay - that these are the kinds of books I read anyway! I'm only aiming for Peril the Second, but I'm already halfway to meeting the challenge :) Have fun with this one!

  21. This challenge does sound perfect for someone who reads a lot of thriller, mystery, etc. That's not me, though. I pretty much read them only when I can't seem to say no.....and then usually enjoy them very much.
    Good luck with the challenge!
