R.I.P.X - A summary....

What a fun time it has been to participate, if a little quietly, in R.I.P. X.  I've meant to join in with this event for years and years.  Of course, just when it started, I kind of quit writing reviews.  Ah well.  It's all good.  I am going to use this as a summary post of what I've read during September and October that falls into the R.I.P. category.  And, no, not everything I've read would qualify.  Most things, but not all.  Here's what I read for Peril the First:

Audiobooks

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson

The Girl In The Spider's Web by David Lagercrantz

Dust And Shadow by Lyndsay Faye

Salem's Lot by Stephen King

As you can see, I was kind of focused on the Lisbeth Salander books.  The first 3 were re-reads for me in preparation for the 4th.  All good.  Then a little Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes and then some Maine vampires.

Books in Print or E-Books

In A Dark Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

Burnt Paper Sky by Gilly Macmillan (aka What She Knew in the US - will be published 12/1/15)

Long Upon The Land by Margaret Maron (the last Deborah Knott mystery - #20 - sob!)

After The Storm by Linda Castillo

The Ghost Fields by Elly Griffiths

Disclaimer by Renee' Knight

Bliss House by Laura Benedict

Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter

Missing You by Harlan Coben

I managed to read some of the newest books in several of my favorite series and also picked up some new authors.  Bliss House would qualify as horror and Missing You was a book group read.  The goal was to read 4 books in the category and between the audio and regular books, I read 15.  Score!

I totally failed on reading or watching any of the items that I shared in the picture above (which was on my original post).  What is it about making set lists or publicly sharing your 'picks'?  I immediately want to read something else.  Ha!  Well, all of these are still in my home, so maybe next year, right?

I guess the new fall shows in my regular TV watching would qualify for Peril On the Screen.  I watch a lot (really a lot) of crime shows.  And I'm happy that the new season has begun.  I wasn't overly enthused with this summer's Masterpiece Mystery.  There was no Lewis.  I'm waiting for the next season of that show - have to have my Hathaway fix.

Hope everyone else had a good reading time in September and October and you can bet that I'll be joining in again next year.  Here's to R.I.P. XI, yes??

  1. I watch a lot of crime shows as well so I would do pretty good on the Peril on Screen though I'm don't watch much horror. You got some really interesting reading done for this challenge! I really want to read Elly Griffith, Karin Slaughter, and Harlan Coben. Bliss House looks really intriguing and I've been wanting to read In a Dark Dark Wood.

    1. I was glad to get caught up on several of my fav series. Now, I'm kind of feeling like a shift to cozies or probably a re-reading binge is coming. It's that time of year. Busy and I like reading things that I already know I'll like. LOL

  2. I didn't read as many books as I had hoped for this challenge but all of the ones that I finished were good so there is that. My favorite read was Depraved Heart by Patricia Cornwell. Do you read this series? I'm reading it a bit backwards, I started at the beginning listening to them on audio (I think I just finished the 3rd) but when a book tour came along I jumped at it and read this one and the one before it. I've got Bliss House on my TBR list and am hoping to read it soon. Glad to hear that you enjoyed this challenge as well. It is one of my favorites!

    1. I used to read Patricia Cornwell's books - a long time back. I can't think where I left off - maybe #7 or #8? I got annoyed with her writing and just never went back. The story took a turn that I was so frustrated with. Anyway, I've seen good things about Depraved Heart. It makes me want to read it and I may. :-)

  3. This is the first year since its inception that I haven't taken part, but I love getting suggestions from those who did. Really interested in Bliss House.

    1. Bliss House was good. It's part of a trilogy, I think. Bliss House is the first and then the second, Charlotte's Story, was just published. I think the third will be out next year maybe. I want to read Charlotte's Story now.

  4. You did great with the challenge!! I see a lot of books there that are in my TBR pile or I want to read. I read Disclaimer not long ago, really liked it. Great job, and yep, I'm looking forward to R.I.P. XI... Happy Halloween!

    1. Yes, Disclaimer was good. Maybe not quite as good as I had hoped, but good enough. It was different for sure. You read some good ones too, Diana.

  5. Great selection there, Kay. I must get back to Linda Castillo... read two and loved them.

    1. Oh, yes, Cath, I think that Linda Castillo's books have held up well as the series has progressed.

  6. I would like to participate in one of those sometime. I did a "literary scavenger hunt" and enjoyed that. Plus I got 3rd place. Bonus. It was fun to take a look at some more authors I haven't heard of.

    1. You should do it, Gayle. Your reading, most of it anyway, would fit right in to this challenge.

  7. That's a lot of books you've read for the challenge, Kay! I've In a Dark Dark Wood in my pile and I look forward to reading it. There are lots of raves on this book and I'm curious. How do you find the book, Kay?

    1. I liked In A Dark Dark Wood and will watch for what the author writes next. I could see the story as a movie pretty easily.

  8. You are so good to do a summary. I can barely get it together to read and review, but not summary posts like this. Lately work has been really demanding and it makes it more interesting at work but no energy at home. I haven't even linked a lot that I read and I should go do that right now.

    1. Well, I didn't really do 'proper' reviews, Tracy. LOL

I seem to have lost my desire to write long-ish posts about just one book. For a while anyway. We'll see if it comes back. Otherwise, everyone will likely just get a short paragraph or even a sentence or two. So, a summary was the thing. And I just linked to Amazon. :-)

  9. I've decided I'm hopeless at challenges, but this one does sound as if it's been fun. Well done! 15 is quite an achievement! :D

    1. Oh, you could easily do this one. There's a category for just 1 book. Plus, you read crime fiction and that qualifies. :-)

  10. You did great!! That is a great count you read/listened to for this event. I hope to do this event next year. It was fun checking out what RIP participants read and reviewed.

    1. Yes, this was tailor-made for me. Reading the spooky, the mysterious, the mystery in general. I had a good time and plan to join in next year as well.

  11. I loved 'The Ghost Fields' by Elly Griffiths. But of course, one has to begin with the first book, in this series. :-)

    1. It does help to begin at the beginning, but I know not everyone has time to go back and start a series over. Glad you enjoyed The Ghost Fields, Tessa.

    1. Well, it was for 2 months and it comprised most of my reading. Still, it was great fun!

  13. You had a great RIP!! I didn't read anything on my original list, but did manage one cozy... not an especially strong showing;-)

    1. Well, these books are a little outside of your normal reading, JoAnn. I think that a cozy was perfect for you. And I didn't read any of my original list either. Kind of a whole 'grass greener' mentality. LOL

  15. It sounds like you had a good reading month, Kay, especially when it came to the challenge. :-) I've only read the first book in the Larsson series. At one time I had been interested in reading the rest, but not so much anymore.

    1. Yes, those books are not everyone's taste. I like them but totally understand those who don't choose to partake. :-)

  16. Oooh, BLISS HOUSE sounds good. I also need to go back and finish IN A DARK, DARK WOOD.

I love the RIP Challenge. It's always fun :)
