What our mystery book group will read for the second half of 2019...

I thought several of you might be interested in what is scheduled for our mystery book group reading pleasure in upcoming months.  We meet at a local library branch and have done so for over 11 years now.  It's fun to visit with other crime novel lovers and discuss what we've read - mysteries, thrillers, suspense, cozies, true crime, and TV and movie adaptations.

August 2019The ‘I’s’ Have It! – Reading books set in countries or states beginning with the letter ‘I’

September 2019THE ESCAPE ARTIST by Brad Meltzer

October 2019SHIRLEY JACKSON Month – Choose any of her books or short stories

November 2019KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON: THE OSAGE MURDERS AND THE BIRTH OF THE FBI by David Grann

December 2019 - Annual Christmas Party, Favorite Reads for the Year, and Book Swap

  1. I haven't read any of these, but this sounds like a very fun book club!

  2. I've only read Killers of the Flower Moon, but didn't like it as much as most readers seemed to. Some of it might have been due to the audio production.

    1. Oh, yes, the audio was not my favorite either. I read it earlier this year for another book group. I need to remember to mention that to the members. The two guys that narrated were fine, but that woman...ick!

  3. I haven't read any of them either, a book from a country beginning with 'I' sounds like such a fun thing to do though. I might well do an 'I' country in August just for fun. :-) Shall write in my diary.

  4. I read Need to Know, an intense and frightening espionage novel. I am interested in Killers of the Flower Moon and The Escape Artist.

    1. I've already read Need To Know too. I liked it mostly, but I'm curious what others will think. I'll also be curious what you'd think of Killer of the Flower Moon. You live close enough to know something of Oklahoma.

  5. Nice list. I've got a copy of Need to Know buried in one of my reading piles. I must move it up the queue.

    1. It was an interesting book, Catherine. I didn't love it as much as I hoped, but put it on the list anyway. There were enough copies at the library - always an issue with a library program. We have a large group and having enough copies has become problematic.

  6. Looks like some fun choices. I especially like The I's have It in August. :)

    1. Yes, I though that was fun. We usually try to do a theme with a certain setting for August - sort of a vacation thing.

  7. If people want a suggestion for the I month - there are two Rabbi Small books set in Israel called Monday the Rabbi Took Off, and One Fine Day the Rabbi Bought a Cross.

    1. Thanks, Nan. I'll try to mention that to the group. There are a lot of 'I' countries and states.

  8. Looks like a fun line up! I would love a Shirley Jackson month. I've been wanting to read Killers of the Flower Moon for ages. I may get in on audio. Enjoy your book club!

    1. We try to do a sort of 'gothic' theme for October each year - either through a book or an author. Shirley Jackson seemed appropriate.

  9. I hope you guys enjoy Need to Know better than I did. The main character's inner dialogue got very annoying!

  10. And Kay does such an excellent job of choosing books for us, mixing it up a bit. We have a blast.

    1. We do have a good time don't we? Thanks for the kind words about my choices. All these other bloggers help me, as you might imagine. ;-)

  11. I like that sometimes you have a month where you would read different books, and other months you all read the same book. I am now reading a book set in Italy (A Private Venus by Giorgio Scerbanenco) and I plan to read at least one book from Iceland this year. I had not thought of Israel. Oh and I plan to do Ireland too.

    1. Yes, there are a lot of 'I' countries - more than you might expect. As to the themes and individual books, over the years the library has cut down on copies of books purchased except for the most popular. Those are usually hard to get on hold without waiting for months. I started doing the themes to help with that. It works pretty well. As this is a library program, we can't expect people to purchase their own copy and this group is large - about 25 active members.

  13. I enjoyed Killers of the Flower Moon recently - still haven't got around to writing my review yet! What are you doing for August? Have you read Abir Mukherjee's series set in India in the last days of the Empire? If not, I recommend them - the first book is A Rising Man...

    1. Thanks for the suggestion about A Rising Man. I think I already own that one. I'm going to try to read several books from different settings - Iceland, Ireland, India, Italy (maybe). We'll see.

  14. I listened to Killers of the Flower Moon and didn't love it as much I thought I would. Our library group is supposed to read it but, the librarian hasn't been able to been able to reserve enough LP editions as several in our group need them.

    1. Yes, the audio was good in part, but the woman narrator was problematic for me. I read Killers for another group earlier this year. As to your librarian's problems, I totally understand about that. In the beginning, I was able to put books on hold and keep them behind the desk for members to check out. Then the library changed the policy and left members on their own. I have to make sure there are enough copies potentially available. And we still have issues at times. Sigh.

  16. You guys have some great reading ahead! Have you decided what you'll read for "I"? I recommend the series by Arnaldur Indridasson if you haven't checked it out yet. Set in Iceland. My book group also does a book swap in December. Always enjoy the festive mood and we also try to read a book with a Christmas setting.

  17. This sounds like a fun book club, I do like that you have a little room for manoeuvre in some of the months!

    1. Yes, the 'themes' came about because the library has stopped ordering so many copies of books. It has made me look for different solutions to the problem. We do a little of this and a little of that.
