kay's week - 9.6.19

I'm going to go back to a weekly update on reading and life for a while or that's my plan anyway.  I don't have too much to say for this week as I've already had two posts relating our summer fun and also my R.I.P. XIV challenge entry.  I also don't think I will talk much about my reading since my last update, but here's a bit:

I did finish Betty Webb's Lena Jones series and loved all of it.  Such a wonderful series.  I then read all of Robert Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite books - there are 6 up to now and a new one coming out early next spring.  From Webb's Arizona setting to Dugoni's Washington mountains - it was perfect.  I read a couple of books for the afternoon book group that I attend - Send Down the Rain by Charles Martin and The Library Book by Susan Orlean (upcoming discussion on the 17th).  The Escape Artist by Brad Meltzer was our mystery group's September book.  Oh, and I must mention Molten Mud Murder by Sara E. Johnson - it's a debut book and is set in New Zealand - vivid setting indeed.  All the book covers are to the right and are linked to Amazon if you want to read more about them.

I'm still trying to get back in the swing of my routines.  I've had to miss yoga several times for various reasons - had a crown come off and that meant an urgent trip to the dentist (he was able to put it back on - let's hope it stays), attended a good friend's father's memorial service this week, checkup and battery replacement on our pickup - all of these seemed to have to happen during my yoga class time.  Ah well.  I'll soon get it all sorted.

Right now, I'm listening to Riley Sager's new book, Lock Every Door.  Perfect for R.I.P.  And I'm reading the second book in Dawn Brookes' mystery series set on a cruise ship, Deadly Cruise.  Enjoying it very much.  I would never make it on a cruise, but I like reading about them.

We are hosting a family birthday event this weekend so we will be busy.  Football has begun - what more can you want?  Take care everyone and hope you have a nice weekend!

  1. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on Lock Every Door. I hope it's a good one. And Deadly Cruise sounds intriguing, too. Happy Friday!

    1. I'm almost finished with Lock Every Door. It hasn't played out quite how I predicted. We'll see how it ends. I am liking those cruise books.

  2. I haven't read Riley Sager yet, but Lock Every Door sounds so cool! Also looking forward to your thoughts on The Library Book, since I've been going back and forth on that one.

    1. The Library Book is good, but I think that parts were a little dry. Worth your time, but it's not only about the fire in the Los Angeles Library.

  3. I'll be looking for your updates. Bummer on the crown, but glad it was just a matter of getting it back on there.

    1. Yes, I was surprised honestly that he was able to put it back on. We'll see if it stays on.

  4. I had a crown come off earlier this year. The dentist made a comment about he'd use a better glue this time. I wondered why he didn't use the "better" glue to start with.

    1. That happened to me, too, Kathy. I had the same thought as you about the glue... and again when the crown came off a second time. *sigh*

    2. OK, you two, Kathy/Cathy, are making me nervous. I shouldn't be though. My husband has crowns that come off all the time. We'll see if it remains on for a longer period. By the way, I was using my water flosser when it came off. I told the dentist that I was doing a good thing for my teeth. LOL

  5. I downloaded Lock Every Door from the library, and I'm hoping I can read it before it expires. I'm juggling too many books at the moment! Hope you can get back to yoga - I've been doing some at home, and it seems to help with sleep & stress. Have a great weekend!

    1. I do want to get back to my regular yoga practice. It does help with lots of issues. I'll be curious what you think of Lock Every Door if you get to it.

  6. I wasn't impressed with Lock Every Door, seemed like a re-imagining of Rosemary's Baby, but most people seem to like it. I'm interested in the book set in New Zealand!

    1. Perhaps they're not familiar with Rosemary's Baby?

    2. I did know that Lock Every Door had been compared to Rosemary's Baby (which I remembered from long ago). I'm liking it well enough, but I think I like his first two books better. The book set in New Zealand is worth your time, Jenclair.

  7. Yes, I had to go for emergency dental treatment twice this year. It's so not funny so I can sympathise, Kay!

    1. I didn't always feel nervous of the dentist, but I had a bad crown experience a number of years ago and since that time I get really anxious.

  8. You've mentioned so many good books and series that I'll be putting on my TBR list. I've been away from blogging for a while but hope to get back to the routine soon now that the summer is over.

    1. Catherine, good to see your comment. I knew you had been away from blogging for a bit. Hope you'll be able to share some reads with all of us soon.

    2. It's good to be back, Kay. I missed my blogging pals.

  9. I hope that crown stays on. Mouse and I visited the dentist this past week for regular check ups and it went well. It was Mouse's first visit with the "adult" dentist as she's aged out of seeing her pediatric dentist.

I ended up giving away my Betty Webb books unread a few years ago. Maybe someday I will give them a try. I am glad you liked the series. The Library Book is on my TBR pile.

I hope the family birthday celebration goes well this weekend! We have rehearsal and dance all day Saturday and then Sunday, Mouse is going to a birthday party for a friend. It seems like September is full of birthdays. :-) Have a great weekend, Kay.

    1. Yes, September is a popular birthday time with our family. My poor husband. His mother, wife, and daughter all have September birthdays. Ha! Glad the visit you and Mouse made to the dentist went well. :-)

  10. I agree with you about the setting of Molten Mud Murder. It's excellent. In scanning your sidebar, I noticed that you've devoured Tracy Crosswhite which reminded me that I need to get back to that series. But right now I'm in foggy 1930s London in Martin Edwards' Gallows Court. Quite the departure for him I must say.

    1. I noticed that Martin Edwards had a new book set in historical times. I'll watch for your thoughts. Yes, I really enjoyed the Tracy Crosswhite books. I actually also read the one that will come out next spring as well as an advance copy. I didn't add that to the list on the right though. Enjoyed it too.

  11. I've only read the first Tracy Crosswhite book, but I'm planning to read more in the series. I, of course, love the Washington settings! I've heard Dugioni even mentions little tiny towns in the Columbia River Gorge that only locals (me!) have ever heard of, so that will be fun!

    1. Susan, there are tiny towns in the Columbia River Gorge. Bet you will enjoy that part. Not sure if they all actually exist, but you'd know. I really like Dugoni's writing.

  12. Oh I hope your crown will be ok! I've been meaning to read some Robert Dugoni books but you know how it is. Hope you are enjoying the weekend!

    1. Yes, I hope so too. Seems like the other option for this tooth is extraction. It's in a complicated place and there are other issues as well. We'll see how it goes.

  13. Kay, I've had to miss 4 of my last 6 yoga classes as well and boy did I miss that. (hate when life and other things get in the way) LOL

Hope you enjoy Lock Every Door; Sager - I thought it was a good one overall.

    1. I did enjoy Lock Every Door, though it's not my favorite of this author's books. I think I actually liked the first one, Final Girls, best so far.

  14. It's wonderful when you finish a series and can say you loved it. I'm happy to see that is true for you. It annoys me, too, when I have to miss my yoga class. Life should not interfere with yoga. It's as necessary as breathing...well, it is breathing. lol

I hope you will get back to weekly updates.

  15. I so want to read the Tracy Crosswhite series. Hope the dentist used strong glue to keep your crown on. I have several, but so far none have come off.

    1. Yes, I think from what I've heard, the glue sometimes gives way. My husband has this problem all the time or so it seems. Oh, and I definitely recommend the Tracy Crosswhite series. I think you'd like it a lot. It's good on audio as well.
