Hi there, book friends! Hope you are doing well and enjoying whatever fall looks like in your area. We are doing well here and looking forward to hosting all our family for Thanksgiving this Thursday. It will be a fun day. Not all will be able to attend, but we'll welcome those that can come.
I know it's been a bit of time since I updated my blog here. I go through these periods where I mean to share things and then something else comes along and updates get pushed aside.
Let's see, it was midsummer when I took a break and we've been busy. I have a couple of specific posts that I will share in the next couple of weeks. One of our area libraries where I used to volunteer has a new building and it is truly lovely. I went there recently and took a few pictures and will share those. We also took a vacation in August to Colorado - drove to Colorado Springs and then to Durango and I have a few pictures of that trip. Plus I was able to visit several independent bookstores that I also want to tell you guys about. Lots of fun!
In September we had a big 90th birthday party for my mother-in-law. She wasn't sure she wanted everyone to do that, but she ended up having a really good time and a bunch of relatives from out of town were able to attend, as well as friends and family here. So glad we were able celebrate that big milestone with her.
September and October also seemed to be the time when both my husband and I had a bunch of our annual or semiannual doctor/dentist visits. Always fun! I especially 'like' some of the older adult questions that they seem to have to ask like 'when was the last time you fell?' - ha! I mean, I know people do fall and medical people have to check these things, but my aim is not to fall if possible. Reminding myself that continuing to work on my health journey through good eating and movement helps, right? I do enjoy my 'walks' at the rec center on the indoor track and continue to do those. Plus stretching, yoga, a bit of strength training - it's all good.
Reading life - oh, yes, this is a book blog - ha! I haven't had much to share in that regard because I have been making my way through J.D. Robb's Eve Dallas and Roarke mystery series this year. I love rereading favorite series and this is one that I decided I'd do again in 2024. Well, there are 59 books in this series - #60 will be published in February, 2025 - and I'm currently reading #58 - Random In Death. Only one more and then we'll see what else catches my eye. No, I haven't just been reading these, but they have taken up a lot of time. I have still been attending two book groups that I have been part of for many years. I'll talk about what those groups are reading for the first half of 2025 and also what we've been reading this fall soon. See, I do have some ideas for posts to share - ha! I also have a few books that I'm 'waiting on' and will let you guys know about those as well.
Mostly, I want to say that I've missed writing these posts, so here I am again. I love hearing about what you've been reading and what's been going on in your lives. I know that several of our blogging friends are no longer posting. We all have to do what works for us, but I hope they know they are missed. Take care all! Hope you have a good week! I have a little Thanksgiving Day post and then I'll be back with more 'talk' after that.
So glad to hear life has been treating you well! I've missed your posts. And I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family. :D
ReplyDeleteI appreciate that, Lark! And I hope you and yours also have a nice Thanksgiving!
DeleteLovely to see a new post from you, Kay. I hope Thanksgiving and your hosting of it goes well on Thursday. With your experience I'm sure you and your family will have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteYes, best 'not' to fall. I do actually know when I last fell, I took a tumble in our little utility room (where we have the washing machine and dishwasher) on the 31st. Dec. of last year. I hit my head on the end of a door and it was pretty horrible so 'please' take care and try not to do something similar.
My eldest daughter is a big fan of the Roarke books and I think, like you, she's read them all and loves them. Look forward to seeing all of the other posts you're hoping to write.
Oh, Cath! I'm sorry about your fall last year. Did you tell us about it and I've just forgotten? I know that medical people do have to check with all of us to see how we are in certain areas - like the falling risk. Guess I'm just a little grumpy that I'm to that age - ha! I think you've told me that your daughter likes the J.D. Robb books. I just started #59 and should finish it in the next couple of days. Then I'll have to wait until February - sigh.
DeleteWelcome back, Kay! Glad to hear that life has been full and treating you well! Thank you for visiting my blog during your downtime! Can't wait to see pics and hear about your trips! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteAngela, hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving too. I always love coming by your blog and hearing about what you're reading and also updates on your sweet boy.
DeleteHey, Kay!! I was so happy to see your post this morning! I'm looking forward to your travel photos. Isn't it fun to visit independent bookstores while on the road? It's one of my favorite things to do when we're traveling. Your mother-in-law is just a little bit younger than my mom (who turned 91 in May). My mom didn't want a big party, but really enjoyed the gathering we had with friends and neighbors, followed by a summer-long celebration with visits from family members starting in May and ending in October of 2023! Glad your MIL enjoyed her celebration. Yep, we're on the same medical/dental schedule as you guys. Seems like we have so many more appointments than when we were younger, doesn't it? You have been missed here, and I know everyone will be happy to see your book posts in the coming weeks. I was just thinking about all the bloggers who are no long blogging. It makes me sad and I miss them! xoxo
ReplyDeleteLes, yes, one of my favorite activities on vacations is checking out local bookstores. And since hubby has the golf, I have the books. More complicated buying them when we are travelling by air, but we drove this summer. Now I'll have to try to remember which books I got where. Ha! Yes, I remember when your Mom had that 'big' birthday. Glad she's doing well. My mother-in-law is doing OK, but she may be having some surgery coming up and we'll see how she fares. Hope you guys have a lovely Thanksgiving!!
DeleteIt is good to see a post from you, Kay. I always like those annual doctor visits where they ask you if you have fallen in the last year, etc. We have those coming up in January.
ReplyDeleteYou have got me thinking about a series I could reread this year. I always reread a few Rex Stout books each year, and over the last few years I reread most of Margery Allingham's books. I would like to reread the S.J. Rozan series (Lydia Chin/Bill Smith) but I would have to locate all my old copies.
I'm glad I'm not the only one getting the 'questions' from the doctors. As to series reading, well, you know that I love doing that. Good luck if you decide to reread the Rozan series. I just love reminding myself of how the characters came together and grew and changed. Hope you guys have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
DeleteYou have missed writing these posts; we have greatly missed reading them! We must meet up one of these days. I skipped the Texas Book Festival this year, but I hope to go there next year.
ReplyDeleteI know, Deb. I keep thinking we will do that. I will admit that I haven't gone to the Texas Book Festival in a long time. Think I attended once or twice. Downtown Austin is not my favorite place to drive to. However, maybe we could figure out a way to have lunch together if you come next year.
DeleteIt’s nice to have you back, Kay! Happy Thanksgiving to you!
ReplyDeleteRobin, so nice to hear from you! Hope you are doing well and that you had a nice day yesterday with family. Take care!
DeleteHi Kay, nice to see your update. I guess the "fall" question is one a lot of us get from the doctor now. Luckily my answer to date is no but I did trip on a tree limb while hiking a month ago and that scared me. It was in a state park and I was with my sisters so I didn't worry about what would happen to me. It was the act of falling that scared the heck out of me. I wasn't hurt but it made me more careful. And I guess that counts as a fall that I'll have to report when asked. As to blogging, I feel a bit guilty about being spotty with posts but I'm not ready to give it up altogether. Hopefully our northern winter will provide more time. I'll do a life update before the end of the year as well as a couple of more posts. Take care and enjoy the holiday season!
ReplyDeleteMary @Bookfan
Mary, so happy you stopped by! Good to hear what you've been doing and, yes, tripping on a tree limb would scare me too. As to your updates, do what works for you. I do miss those who have decided not to blog anymore, but life does change and look different from time to time. Hope you enjoy the holiday season as well. Take care!
DeleteThe JD Robb series is on my TBR. I love her books under Nora Roberts but have never tried the Robb series but I know so many people who enjoy the series. Happy birthday to your MIL and I'm so glad she enjoyed her celebration. It sounds like such fun. It sounds like you've been busy and having fun which is always the best!
ReplyDeleteKatherine, I think you might like the JD Robb books, but it is definitely a long, long series now. I just finished #59 and am all caught up until February. ;-)
DeleteIt's always a treat to see a post from you, Kay! Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I'm sure you're gearing up for Christmas now. I had to laugh as read about your doctor visit... just scheduled my annual physical, derm check up, teeth cleaning, etc. today. Feb/March is going to fun - ha!
ReplyDeleteJoAnn, thanks for coming by! Yes, sounds like you'll have a 'great' time in Feb/March. I have a teeth cleaning appointment next week. ;-)
