'Waiting on Wednesday' is an event where I feature an upcoming book that I am extra excited about. I used to do this in the past and am making it a priority to do again. Seriously, who among us doesn't have a book or two or twenty that we are excited about reading? Plus, it lets us 'spread the word' about authors and series that we personally enjoy.
I love the cover on this week's book by Ann Cleeves. I've mentioned before that I am a big fan of this author's Vera Stanhope series - both in print and TV adaptations. I've also read her Matthew Venn series and watched the TV adaptation. I think there are 3 books featuring Matthew and a single TV season. I have also watched and loved the Shetland TV adaptation, but here's a little secret...I've yet to read a single Shetland book that features DI Jimmy Perez. Not sure why, just hasn't happened yet. There are 8 Shetland books and the last one was written in 2018. It told of Jimmy leaving Shetland for another area and I'm sure he has been missed by readers of those books. Well, apparently Ann Cleeves has missed Jimmy as well. Her website says that this is a Jimmy Perez standalone, set in the islands of Orkney. I'm excited about it and think I might have enough time to read the Shetland books before the end of September. Have you read any books by Ann Cleeves or watched any of the TV shows? Tell us if you have.

The Killing Stones
Publication Date: September 30th
The Killing Stones marks the eagerly awaited return of Ann Cleeves' beloved detectives from the Shetland series, and a gripping new investigation with a stunning new setting, from the New York Times bestselling author and creator of three iconic detectives beloved in TV and print: DI Jimmy Perez (the Shetland series), DI Vera Stanhope, and DI Matthew Venn (The Long Call).
It's been several years since Detective Jimmy Perez left Shetland. He has settled into his new home in Orkney, the group of islands, off the northern coast of Scotland, with his partner Willow Reeve and their growing family. One stormy winter night, his oldest and closest friend, Archie Stout, goes missing. Ever the detective, Perez catches a boat to the island of Westray, where Archie worked as a farmer and lived with his wife and children.
But when he arrives he finds a shocking scene: Archie's body, on an archaeological dig site and an ancient Westray story stone with precise spirals carved into it beside him, the clear murder weapon. The artifact, taken from a nearby museum, seems to suggest a premediated murder.
But Perez is so close to the case that he struggles to maintain an objective distance from the potential suspects. He finds it difficult to question Archie's wife, whom he's known for years. Rumors swirl about the dead man's relationship with a young woman new to the island, an artist. With each new lead, the case becomes more twisted and Perez wonders if he will ever find out what happened in his friend's final days.
That is a great cover! Sadly, I still haven't read any of her books. I keep meaning to, but....
ReplyDeleteSo many books for all of us to try, right? We all have such long lists! Ha!
DeleteOh, I'm glad she's revisiting this series. I've only read a couple of them so far but have really enjoyed them and am looking forward to reading the rest. Don't think I'll get through them all in time for this release, though!
ReplyDeleteYes, I was happy to hear she had missed Jimmy Perez. Not sure I'll get through all of them either, but we'll see.
DeleteI read three or four of the Perez books and enjoyed them, then along came the TV series and I don't think I read another of the books after that started. I've no idea why. I certainly would like to read this Perez standalone though and look forward to that coming out.
ReplyDeleteCath, we have so many books on our TBR lists don't we? Hope you get to try this new one when it's published.
DeleteThat's a really great cover! I will try something by Ann Cleeves one of these days. I hope you enjoy this one when you read it, Kay!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Wendy! I am definitely looking forward to reading it.
DeleteOver the past several months I've watched the Vera Stanhope series - almost finished. I'll look for the Matthew Venn series. I've read most of them. The Killing Stones sounds very good. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteMary
Happy to add to your list, Mary! Ha!
DeleteThat really is a good cover. I've not read her books!
ReplyDeleteI think the cover is very cool looking. Looking forward to trying it.
DeleteI wonder if this will evolve into another tv series!
ReplyDeleteI don't know. Maybe. Her website says this is a standalone, but?? Not sure if anyone other than Douglas Henshaw could play Jimmy Perez. Guess we'll see. ;-)
DeleteEven though my post today is about my reluctance to read books in a series, my husband and I are currently in Season 4 of Vera, and now I'd like to try a Vera book.
ReplyDeleteHope you'll like one of the books if you decide to try it, Deb. I'd say the books and TV adaptation are pretty closely related, unlike some series (i.e. Will Trent - books by Karin Slaughter). I like the Will Trent TV series and I love the books. They are not exactly the same though.
DeleteThe Orkney islands setting is going to be wonderful in the new book. I have not read Cleeves yet, but you & others have gotten me to put her books on my library list. Do you like her series best or her standalones?
ReplyDeleteSusan, I'm not sure she has written any standalones. I mentioned that this one is listed as such on her website, but I wonder. She has several series. Yes, I think those islands sound very interesting and the setting is part of what I enjoy about her books.
DeleteI haven't read the Shetland series other than The Raven Black but watched the television adaptations and really liked it. The standalone about Jimmy sounds interesting. I have not read the Vera books but have read The Long Call and really liked it. Very good author. So many books I would love to read...
ReplyDeleteI think Ann Cleeves is very talented. And she has written a lot of books. Not sure if I'll ever get around to all of them. Ha!
DeleteAgree that it is a great cover!
ReplyDeleteI thought it was very atmospheric. :-)
DeleteIt is interesting that Ann Cleeves is bringing Jimmy Perez back. I have read 4 of the books, and have number 5 (somewhere). I would want to read the last three before reading this one, but it certainly could be interesting.
ReplyDeleteRight now I am more interested in the Vera series and the Birding series. Cleeves writes very well so probably anything she has written is worth trying.
