'Waiting on Wednesday' is an event where I feature an upcoming book that I am extra excited about. I love doing this, letting the 'word' spread about authors and series that I enjoy. Hope you'll stop by often and see what I'm 'waiting' on.
Since this is October, I felt like I should feature a book I'm 'waiting on' that contains some 'spooky' or 'Gothic' aspects. And you can always count on Simone St. James for those. I have read several of her books and enjoyed them. My favorite of those is still The Broken Girls. I wrote about that one here. However, I also enjoyed another book by this author that was set in Fell, New York. It was The Sun Down Motel and I shared my thoughts about it here. St. James' new book is also set in Fell and I think 'spooky' is a good description. It won't be available until January, but I'll be looking forward to trying it. What do you think? Spooky enough? Have you read any books by Simone St. James?
Publication Date: January 20th
Simone St. James, the New York Times bestselling author of The Sun Down Motel, returns with her scariest, most shocking novel yet in this pulse-pounding story about siblings who return to the house they fled 18 years before, called back by the ghost of their long-missing brother and his haunting request: Come home.
Strange things happen in Fell, New York. A mysterious drowning at the town’s roadside motel. The unexplained death of a young girl whose body is left by the railroad tracks. For the Esmie siblings—Violet, Vail, and Dodie—the final straw was the shocking disappearance of their little brother. It started as a normal game of hide-and-seek. The three closed their eyes and counted to ten while Ben went to hide. But this time, they never found their brother—he was gone and the ongoing search efforts turned up no clues.
As their parents grew increasingly distant, Violet, Vail, and Dodie were each haunted by visions and frightening events that made them leave town and never look back. Violet still sees dead people—spirits who remind her of Sister, the menacing presence that terrorized her for years.
And now after two decades running from their past, it’s time for a homecoming. Because Ben is back, and he’s ready to lead them to the answers they’ve longed for and long feared. If the ghosts of Fell don’t get to them first.
A Box Full of Darkness is another propulsive thriller from the author of The Broken Girls and The Book of Cold Cases, a surprising horror story from a writer who is “particularly gifted at doling out twists” (The New York Times).
Yes, I have read one book by Simone St. James, The Broken Girls, I suspect after reading your post about it, Kay. It was 'so' good, very creepy indeed. I do have another one on my Kindle now, An Inquiry into Love and Death... I think it was a Kindle deal. The one I would like to read is The Book of Cold Cases though.
ReplyDeleteCath, I do like the way Simone St. James tells a story. Hope you get to read a few more of her books!
DeleteI have really loved the books I've read by this author and this one look so creepy! I'm really looking forward to reading it.
ReplyDeleteYou and me both, Katherine! She does have that 'creepy' vibe down, doesn't she?
DeleteI haven't read anything by her, but have wanted to for a while, so when this one turned up on NetGalley I nabbed a copy! I'm looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteOh how fun! Hope you enjoy it, FictionFan. I do like this author's way of telling a 'spooky' story. ;-)
DeleteShe has a new one coming out? I'm so excited! She's one of my favs. I love her ghost stories the best. :D
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, Lark. And, yes, I am planning on reading this spooky story as soon as it comes out. So happy about it!
DeleteOoh, this sounds so creepy! Kind of a missed opportunity to have it come out in January!
ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing, Angela. Ah well. Spooky in winter is OK I guess - ha!
DeleteYou know, I like mysteries, but I'm not a big fan of gothic stories. Hope you enjoy this one!
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't think is one that you would like too much, Les. My love of the Gothic goes way back to my teens. Loved my ghost stories - ha!
DeleteThis does sound like a spooky read - maybe a little too much so for me, lol! I'm surprised the publishers are holding it until January.
ReplyDeleteYes, I was a bit surprised that this one is coming after the first of the year. It does seem perfect for October, right? Know this is not to everyone's taste. LOL
DeleteI want to read a book by Simone St. James because she is a Canadian author (although as far as I can tell she hasn't set any of her books there). The problem is her books are not the kind of mystery I like, too creepy or scary. The settings sound good. I am determined to find one to read.
ReplyDeleteI went back and checked your review of The Sun Down Motel. That sounds like a possibility although you did describe it as creepy. I read my comment on that post and it felt like reading a time capsule. The post was almost exactly 4 years ago.
Simone St. James may not be the best author for you, Tracy. She does write some scary books and includes some supernatural things in many of them. Maybe one of her earlier ones? This one does seem 'perfect' for spooky season. Good luck with finding one that will work for your reading life.
