My Afternoon Book Group schedule for the first half of 2026....

Hello book buddies!  Hope you are all having a nice weekend!  We are having a cold, icy, sleety, snowy time.  Not my favorite type of weather at all.  Have I said I like spring a lot?  And I'm so ready for it?  Well, I am.  We're just not equipped for cold events like this and also few people know how to drive in it.  I know - this too shall pass.

I thought I would share what the other book group that I attend is planning for January-June of 2026.  We've already had our January meeting, but I'll talk a bit about that discussion at the end of the post.  This group is the one that I call 'The Afternoon Book Group' - it's in the afternoon on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.  And, yes, it's one that I worked with when I was a library employee.  A very nice lady took it over when I left the library staff and she's still leading it.  Barbara is great!  Here's the first of half of 2026 plan.  Oh, and since a couple of the months have themes with several books that the members can select from, I won't be adding pictures and blurbs to all of them.  I will put a star (*) by the one I'm planning on reading.

January - Beyond That, the Sea by Laura Spence-Ash

A sweeping, tenderhearted love story, Beyond That, the Sea by Laura Spence-Ash tells the story of two families living through World War II on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, and the shy, irresistible young woman who will call them both her own.

----------------------------------------------------

February - Come meet the author!

Jennifer Marchman joins us as we discuss The Mender Trilogy, a historical time travel series set in 1899's Texas.  The books are The Mender, The Captive, and The Guardian.

-----------------------------------------------------

March - A River Runs Through It

Select one of the 'river' books:

The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhorn - **

Swift River by Essie Chambers

The River is Waiting by Wally Lamb

Go As A River: A Novel by Shelley Read

Long Bright River: A Novel by Liz Moore

----------------------------------------------------------

April - How To Read a Book: A Heartfelt Novel of Redemption and Unlikely Friendships in a Small Town by Monica Wood

A charming, deeply moving novel about second chances, unlikely friendships, and the life-changing power of sharing stories.

------------------------------------------------------------

May - Reader's Choice

Select one of these books to read and come tell us how it resonated with you:

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans - **

---------------------------------------------------------------

June - Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy

A family on a remote island. A mysterious woman washed ashore. A rising storm on the horizon.

--------------------------------------------------------------

What do you think?  Have you read any of these books and do you have thoughts on them?  I'm looking forward to trying perhaps more than one on the months where there is a choice.  We shall see.

The group did have a good discussion of Beyond That, The Sea last Tuesday afternoon.  I liked the book a lot, but there are some who do not like when chapters are narrated by rotating people and they have a hard time keeping track.  That didn't seem to be a problem though.  Some had listened to the book and said the narration was good as well.  Many of us had not realized that children were evacuated to the US from England during the Second World War.  The author had done a lot of research and she shared many things with us that we weren't necessarily all that familiar with.  We learned a lot.  Have you read Beyond That, The Sea?  Share what you thought about it if you have.  This was Laura Spence-Ash's debut book.  I haven't found notice as yet of a second book for her, but our group is hoping for one.

-------------------------------------------------------------

A long post, I know.  Thanks for sticking with me to the end.  I'll be back on Wednesday with a 'Waiting on...' post.  Take care, friends!  Stay warm!  I'll be trying to do the same.  Ha!

  1. I love how in March you can choose your own river book. That's fun. :D

    1. Yes, Barbara did a good job in selecting books with that word in the title. You know, the group is having to do this because when you have a fairly large group and it's a library program, it's often a bit hard to have enough books in the system for all to check out. If it's too new, more books but lots of holds. Older book, not as many copies. Sigh.

  2. Yes I really liked Beyond That the Sea. I hope she has a 2nd book coming. Glad it worked for your book group. I also liked The Frozen River, Go As a River, and Long Bright River. All thumbs up. Also liked The Correspondent, The Wedding People, and Wild Dark Shore. These are good options for your group. How to Read a Book was a bit so-so for me. All should be good discussions. Enjoy!

  5. Interesting selection of books! I haven't heard of most of them but the ones I have are on my TBR. I love the look of How to Read a Book and I have Wild Dark Shore on my shelf but haven't read it yet. I hope you share your thoughts on what you end up reading!

  6. Great lineup! I have Beyond That, the Sea on my kindle and it's on my priority TBR list. The river theme for March sounds like fun, too. I'd choose The Frozen River since it's on my tbr list. How to Read a Book is one I've actually read twice. Really enjoyed it the first time around, then reread before the author joined us live on MMD. She was dellightful! And the May books, The Correspondent and The Wedding People were favorites!

    1. JoAnn, I think you'll like Beyond That, The Sea - hope so anyway. Good to know that you've read 'How to Read a Book' and then heard the author. And thanks for your comments about the May books too. I think it's a great group for the first half of the year.

  7. Oh, goodness. I sure remember icy days when we lived in Fort Worth! Terrible roads especially with the high overpasses. I remember turning around and going home one morning after realizing it would be impossible to try to get to work. I do remember one terrifying drive to Arlington to drive my daughter to take her SATs. We made it only to discover that the test had been postponed due to the weather. Grrr.

I loved Beyond That, the Sea. Such a good story, as is The Frozen River. I have Long Bright River on my shelves, and I'd also like to read Wally Lamb's new book. My book group read How to Read a Book and everyone enjoyed it. The Correspondent was my #1 read in 2025 and I enjoyed The Wedding People (on audio) quite well, too. I'm currently listening to Wild Dark Shore and am completely enthralled. The narration is very good.

    1. First of all, yes, about the icy roads, etc. Better now. Most everything is melted. Not necessarily in yards and some driveways/parking lots. The roads are fine though. I will say they are a lot better at communicating cancellations than they used to be way back or maybe they are just more apt to cancel things. Ha!

Thanks so much for reminding me of your thoughts on all the books you mentioned. I'm looking forward to trying a bunch of these.

  8. I love that your book club has reader's choice months on occasion. I really enjoyed The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love, although I'm not sure it's something I see you reading. I would like to read The Correspondent too. The Frozen River is also on my to read list.

I need to start on The Playground by Richard Powers soon, which is my next book club book. I admit I'm not too excited about it, but I have felt that way about other books we've read and ended up liking them. So, we'll see.

I hope you enjoy all of your book club selections, Kay. Stay safe and take care!

    1. Thanks, Wendy! Yes, I do enjoy those 'reader's choice' months too. Even if I'm not wanting to read all the books, I always hear some good thoughts on them. Good luck with The Playground!
