I've been to two book groups and had fun, plus I'm settling in for a 'Comfort Reads' summer....

Hello book people!  I'm here again to share a bit about what I've been reading and where I've been talking about reading.  Hope everyone has had a good week.  We've moved into a bit of a stormy season, but sometimes rain and storms are forecast and they show up and sometimes they don't.  Typical for Central Texas during May.  It has been nice to see the lake levels trending up because summer is on the way.

I was able to attend two book groups in the last week and enjoyed both of them.  The Mystery Book Group discussion was about The Golden Gate, written by Amy Chua.  This is a historical mystery set in Berkeley, California during the mid-1940's, but it also has portions that occur during the 1930's.  It is the author's debut mystery and it was liked pretty well by most of the group.  Lots of characters and the shifting back and forth in time was not well-loved by some.  I kind of thought the story could be tightened up a bit as we seemed to start over with each character, but I would try another book by the author.  Lots of things to learn about other cultures and also that historical time period.

I also talked about the book I'd read for May in the Afternoon Book Group I attend.  This was a sort of 'Reader's Choice' month and the book I selected was The Correspondent by Virginia Evans.  I know that several of my blogging friends have read this one and it has certainly been popular.  Many in the group found it difficult or impossible to get a copy, but I think some will eventually read it.  This is an epistolary novel and I'm very partial to those books, though I did read this one on audio.  It was populated by various narrators, which suited me just fine.  Several in the group did try this one and almost all who did were very, very complimentary of it.  It's about an older lady, Sybil, who has spent her life corresponding through actual letters and she continues to do so.  She writes to family, to friends, to authors, and also to someone that we're not sure who they are until the end.  Sybil was a bit of a 'grumpy old lady' at times, but I will say that by the end she changed her views on many things.  She 'grew and changed', which I always find a good thing.  Again, like the previous book, there were a few issues that I had, but I think they were all personal to me and not a problem with the book itself.

Both of these book groups are gearing up for the second half of 2026 and what books will be selected, so I'll probably share those choices in a few weeks.  I always like to hear if any of you guys have already read some of them and what you might have thought.  So, have you read The Correspondent or The Golden Gate?  Do tell!

I've already read the books for June for both groups, so I'm going ahead and beginning my 'Comfort Read Summer'.  I think I mentioned that I was thinking about making that a thing for me this year.  I've shared that 'comfort reads' in my life are possibly books that I've read before and enjoyed so, so much or they are books that I've read and they made me feel positive about things or maybe just a book in a well-loved series that I haven't tried as yet.  I'm planning on reading with those goals in mind for most of the summer.  I usually take a blog break also in summer, but maybe I'll try not to do that this year.  Will make a goal to stop around weekly, hopefully, and just share what's been going on and what's been on my 'comfort' list.

Right now, things are going well with the 'family senior living' move, etc.  And I'm listening to the first book in David Baldacci's Amos Decker series, Memory Man.  I'm reading the first book in Nora Roberts' Three Sisters Island Trilogy on my Kindle.  The title of that one is Dance Upon The Air.  Highly enjoying both of these books.  Hope all have a good holiday weekend upcoming and I'll try to check in next week.  I'll leave you with another pretty chalk picture.

  1. The Correspondent was one of my top two reads last year. It was a read/listen combo and I really loved the multi-narrator production. I'll be interested to hear what your book groups choose to read for the second half of the year.

I have several new releases I'm excited about this summer, but also have a couple of backlist titles and another reread of Pride and Prejudice planned. Right now I'm reading Laura Lippman's Murder Takes a Vacation an am enjoying another older protagonist ;-)

Glad to hear the move is going well. I know it's a big change for them and I'm sure your help is appreciated. The chalk pictures are amazing. Thanks for sharing another, and I hope you enjoy the upcoming holiday weekend!

    1. JoAnn, I remember that you really liked The Correspondent. Yes, I thought the multi-person narration was very well done. We'll see what the book groups select for later 2026. Hope you have a good reading summer!!

  2. I hope you don't encounter too many bad storms this year. We had a little bit of rain before we left on our trip, and a few days of rain in Nehalem, but it's been gorgeous in Port Townsend. I'm even wearing shorts and a tank top! I'm in heaven. :)

I've read The Correspondent, and will read it again for my book group later this year. Maybe I'll go with the audio since I've heard good things about it. It's a great book!

I've been reading a lot this month, but sadly gave up on an ARC of debut earlier today. It just wasn't pulling me in, maybe because of the magical realism element. I really wanted to give this first time author a chance, but life is too short...

It's a bit early for us, but I'm going to get our name (and deposit) on a wait list for a retirement community in the Seattle area. My dad and stepmom moved there right before my dad died, and my stepmom loves it. We've been there several times and think it would be a good spot for us... down the road. We don't want to wait too long and be stuck with lengthy wait times. I'm glad your in-laws move is going well.

    1. Les, try the audio of The Correspondent and see what you think. I liked it. Yes, I hear you about giving up on a recent book. I'm just kind of in the spot where I want to enjoy what I'm reading and I had kind of gotten to the place where I was 'making' myself continue. No, no!! That's good thinking about getting your name on a wait list for that retirement community you know about. I have heard that some places have waitlists of 6-8 years! Wow! There are a lot of senior living options in our area, but some of them definitely are more difficult to get into. Thanks for the good wishes!

  3. I love epistolary novels, so I'm looking forward to reading the Correspondent...if I can ever get a copy from my library. It's got hundreds of holds on it at the moment. And I love your idea of a Comfort Read Summer. I think that's what my summer will be like, too...reading more heartwarming books and less angsty or tense ones. Though I do love a good popcorn thriller. :D Happy reading this summer!

    1. Lark, I think if you are an epistolary novel fan that you should definitely try The Correspondent - whenever you can get a copy - ha! It has been quite, quite popular - right? Love how you put it for summer - heartwarming books, etc. And, yes, a thriller is OK, but one that appeals to me - ha! Happy reading right back at you!

  4. I have Dance Upon the Air on my reread list for this year. It's one of my favorites though I can't remember the last time I read the rest of the trilogy. The Correspondent is on my TBR though I'm debating if I should get a print copy or try it on audio. I may end up doing a bit of both. The chalk photo is amazing. It's hard to believe the amount of depth some artists are able to get with chalk!

    1. Katherine, I am enjoying Dance Upon The Air quite a bit. Just taking my time in reading it and liking it so much again. Will continue on with the trilogy, but may slip a book or two in between them. I think a read/listen of The Correspondent would be good - hope you like it if you decide to try it. And, yes, those chalk artists - amazing for sure!

  5. I love the idea of a comfort reads summer. I plan to cut anything from my list that does not work out for me. I enjoyed The Correspondent a lot. Several people said that the audio version of this book was even better than a read of it.

    1. Deb, that's also my plan, if I do indeed read a book or two for the first time - stop reading if it doesn't work for me. I've certainly suggested that to others for many years. Ha! Enjoying the 'comfort reads' though.

    2. I think I shall go over my list and make sure that I, too, have some comfort reads.

  8. Interesting chalk picture. I have read The Correspondent and for the most part I enjoyed it ... I thought Sybil sure had a lot weighing on her shoulders ... and I'm glad some of these things were resolved for her by the end. I liked too that she valued the written word and letters. I'm sure the writing gave clarity & meaning to her ... as it does most of us. Lol. I hope you continue to blog over the summer. Cheers!

    1. It is an interesting picture with the chalk, right? When standing over it, it had a 3D kind of feel. I remember a bit of what you thought about The Correspondent and Sybil. And I agree with your thoughts here. As to summer blogging, that's the plan - ha! Thanks for coming by, Susan!

  9. THE CORRESPONDENT has been getting such good buzz that I finally just bought myself a copy at my local indie. I haven't read it yet, but I'm hoping to get to it soon-ish.

  10. I recently read The Correspondent, and although I liked it on the whole, it didn't really spark anything in me. Like you, I think my reasons are mostly personal and nothing to do with the book itself.
