Kerrville Chalk Festival 2021 and a bit of reading...

I was delighted that the Kerrville Chalk Festival was able to be held this year.  It had to be cancelled last year.  I had shared a post with my experience in 2019 here.  My husband and I took a stroll through the downtown square where these artists express themselves through chalk and we had a great time.  A couple of differences - last time I went early on the Sunday of the festival and we attended this time late Saturday afternoon.  More of the artists are in these pictures as they were mostly still in 'creation' mode.  I think it's quite interesting to see how they plan what they will draw - some with grids and some freehand.  The artists are all ages and some come from our area and some are from out of town or even out of state.  Hope you enjoy this look at the chalk art.

This artist was just in the beginning of her creation.  If you enlarge the picture you can see what the final goal is - just to the right of the grid.

It was a bit difficult to determine what this creation would actually look like in the end until one looked over the artist's shoulder and saw the rooster shot in his lap.  One little boy near us kept telling his Dad that this one was too weird.  Ha!  That eye was a bit creepy!

Since we're in October, a little Morticia and Gomez Addams seems appropriate, right?

And a little Ghostbusters as well!

This artist was younger than most though there was a 'kids' area for children to create.  She seemed to be about middle school.  I thought her creation was great - a longhorn, a roadrunner and an armadillo - Texas creatures!

Each festival has one creation that is '3D' and these flowers and butterflies are this year's 3D art.  Can you see the effect?  It was actually better looking at it through the lens of a camera or on your phone.  Very nice!

Hope you had fun seeing the chalk art.  Yes, I'm still reading and my latest reads are listed below.  I enjoyed all and am continuing my R.I.P. reading.  Only a couple of weeks left!

Twenty-one Days by Anne Perry - 1st in her Daniel Pitt series and mystery book group selection for November.

The Stranger Behind You by Carol Goodman

The Sanitorium by Sarah Pearse

Have a good week and I'll be back soon.  Take care!

  1. Beautiful chalk art - such creative artists. We had that in a college town near us a few years ago - such fun. Good luck with your remaining RIP books (2) of those did not work well for me sadly.

    1. Yes, I really enjoy taking a look at those chalk drawings. This will be an event that I'll look forward to each year. And I went back and took a look at your thoughts on The Sanitorium and The Stranger Behind You. I agreed with several things you said especially that The Sanitorium was much like Ruth Ware's latest.

  2. Kay, I am envious. The Santa Barbra chalk art festival was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 (it happens in May). I hope it will be back in 2022 but there would have to be less crowds and much better situation with Covid-19 than it is now for me to be comfortable going. We will see.

These photos are great. I love seeing the art in all it stages. And that 3D effect is very good. And good to hear that your reading is still going well.

I have to share with you that I have been on Weight Watchers for four months now. It is all online and it is working so well for me. I was initially motivated by severe problems with acid reflux, and that has cleared up now as well.

    1. Tracy, glad you enjoyed looking at my pictures of this chalk festival. I do hope the one in your area can go on next year and you'll be able to attend. As to your experience with WW - good for you! I'm so happy that doing some things differently has helped with your acid reflux. Good luck with your continuing WW journey. :-)

  4. Wonderful creations! I have a friend in Nebraska who is a very talented artist and she has participated in the chalk festivals in Kansas City a few times. I'm always so impressed!

  5. Love the chalk art! I only wish they were permanent. I remember your previous visit, and it is a shame that it had to be canceled last year. Such beautiful, ephemeral art.

    1. I agree about the fact that this art isn't permanent. However, I'm sure that the artists take pictures and then the next year there will be more. Kerrville also has a number of beautiful murals that artists have painted on the sides of various buildings. There's one on the side of the new-to-me hair salon I went to a couple of weeks ago. I might try to take pictures of some of those to share here.

  7. I still remember that post from 2019 and am so glad you got to enjoy it again this year. So interesting that you got a different perspective by seeing the art in progress. They are all so beautiful! Thanks for letting us tag along with you.

    1. JoAnn, yes, I was very interested in seeing more of the actual process the artists used. And it was my pleasure to share this. Hoping to make it an annual event and sharing!

  9. These are gorgeous and what fun to see all these! We've been at Disney World during the Festival of the Arts and they have chalk artists and I always loved seeing their creations but I think these are even better.

    1. Oh, I bet that was fun, Katherine. Don't think we were ever at Disney World during that particular festival. Glad these 'measured up' - ha!

  10. I am disappointed that I didn't look into the Chalk Festival. I really want to get out there one of these days. Will be interested to know what you think of The Sanitorium. I looked at that for the book club but way too many holds right now.

    1. Maybe next year, Gayle. I'll try to keep you in the loop on the date. Seems like it's usually in October at some point. As to The Sanitorium, it was enjoyable, but there were a few things that were annoying. Reminded me of Ruth Ware's new book, One By One. Maybe you should try it and see what you think. The protagonist, a police officer on leave, has a little too much 'over-thinking' going on for me. Interesting stuff about TB and how patients were treated way back in the day.

  11. My sister and I attended a similar event in Houston. I was just learning to take photos, and my sister thought it would be a great place to practice.

    1. Deb, that festival you attended was great! Very similar it seems watching those artists and seeing how hard it is on their bodies to create that art. Down on their knees, etc. So colorful though!

  12. I love all of these art pieces! So do they leave the drawings until the rain and elements just wash them away? One of these days I need to go to Kerrville and check it! I hope you are enjoying your spooky reads for the season. I am almost done with another ghostly read which has turned out quite good so will try to post about it soon.

    1. You know, I don't think they do leave the art, but I'm not sure. Maybe. I haven't been back over to that town square to look. You do need to come to Kerrville and see what it's like. Lots of festivals and things to check out. Sadly, my favorite indie bookstore is closed now. The people who owned it retired. There is a great used bookstore though that's called Books To Share. I try to go by there once a week or so. One family has owned it for something like 30 years.

    1. Melody, I probably won't share anything else about The Sanatorium. I liked it well enough, but there were a few things that irritated me. And it was a lot like Ruth Ware's One By One.
