Waiting on Wednesday - Among The Wicked

This is a weekly event that highlights a book we can't wait to be published.  It is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

I am always delighted to anticipate a new book by Linda Castillo in her Kate Burkholder series.  Just simply delighted.  I love this series!  This week's pick, the 8th book in the series:

Publication Date:  July 12th

Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called upon by the sheriff's department in rural, upstate New York to assist on a developing situation that involves a reclusive Amish settlement and the death of a young girl.  Unable to penetrate the wall of silence between the Amish and "English" communities, the sheriff asks Kate to travel to New York, pose as an Amish woman, and infiltrate the community.

Kate's long time love interest, State Agent John Tomasetti, is dead set against her taking on such an unorthodox assignment, knowing she'll have limited communication - and even less in the way of backup.  But Kate can't turn her back, especially when the rumor mill boils with disturbing accounts of children in danger.  She travels to New York where she's briefed and assumes her new identity as a lone widow seeking a new life.

Kate infiltrates the community and goes deep under cover.  In the coming days, she unearths a world built on secrets, a series of shocking crimes, and herself, alone... trapped in a fight for her life.

  1. I'm waiting on this one, too! I wish that Julia Spencer Fleming would crank one out soon. Do you read her series?

    1. I read Julia Spencer-Fleming and am up to One Was a Soldier, her newest one, I think. So good because it's different, and when you read a ton of mysteries different is good!

    2. Actually, Rita, there's a newer one than One Was A Soldier. It's called Through The Evil Days. Do you know about the website Stop You're Killing Me!? Here's the link and it's a treasure trove for mystery lovers:

    3. Oh and I didn't reply to Tina - yes, I do read her series. She blogs with some other mystery writers at Jungle Red Writers - http://www.jungleredwriters.com. And I know she's working on a new one.

    4. Thanks Kay and sorry to hijack your comments :)
I like to connect with like-minded readers. I'll check out that site you mentioned. I read a few chapters in One Was A Soldier but put it aside to be in the mood for it, much more down than her other installments.

  5. Ooh, can't wait! Kate Burkholder is one of my favorite female investigators. I love her backstory and how she straddles both worlds of the "English" and the "Plain folk". I like Amish stories but some are saccharine-sweet, and that's not my style. I used to visit the Pennsylvania Dutch Lancaster area in PA when I was younger and lived out that way.

Her last story was a doozy-- loved it (but not the hogs, lol!) You have to read it to know what that means, people.

    1. Yes, those pigs. Scary. I like how Kate is going 'under cover' in this new one. Wonder if she can remember enough about the Amish way?

    1. Yes, I do love it and this one sounds really good. The idea that Kate will go undercover is a new one. Plus it will take her out of Painter's Mill. We'll see how it goes.
