What I've been reading so far this month - January 2025...

Hello book friends!  Hope you have all had a good weekend.  I've been thinking of everyone that has been affected by fires and winter storms and also those continuing to recover from storms in past months (North Carolina and surrounding).  Our area had the small snow event, but areas to the south and west of us had a lot more snow than we did.  I couldn't believe some of the pictures I saw of famous places with snow everywhere (Galveston and New Orleans especially).  Wow!

I am so ready for spring.  I know that some really enjoy the winter weather and things that go along with that.  However, I'm not really one of them.  I'm always more than ready to get rid of the cedar pollen that continues to blow into our area over and over.  I say this every year.  Cedar, go away (because it hates me)!!  Ha!

OK, now let's talk about what I've been reading so far in January of 2025.  Right now, I'm working on my 8th book and enjoying it.  It's The Ghost Fields by Elly Griffiths and it's the 7th book in her Ruth Galloway series.  I think I mentioned that I was going to do a reread of that 15-book series.  Almost halfway done.  Yay, me!  I have enjoyed all the ones I've revisited.  The series begins with The Crossing Places, which I had read a couple of times before.  Books 2-6 are ones I hadn't reread at all.  It's been fun to rediscover what I loved about them the first time around.

The Ghost Fields tells of the discovery of a downed WWII plane with a body inside.  Ruth Galloway, a forensic archeologist, determines that the skeleton could not be the pilot and so the task for DI Nelson and his team is to determine who was 'buried' in this way.  I had forgotten how much Elly Griffiths adds to each of these books that educates about myth, legend, and archeological procedures, etc.  Her husband is an archeologist and she has a ready source for all kinds of info for her books.

The other book I've finished this month is How To Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin.  I mentioned recently that this would be our mystery book group selection for February.  It's a good one and I look forward to talking about it with my group.  I'll try to write a review of it after the discussion (if I remember - ha!).  I'm also going to feature the second book in this series in a 'Waiting on Wednesday' post next week.  Stay tuned!  What have you been reading?

  1. We in the UK are enduring one storm after another at the moment. Last night was wild and woolly and I was even woken up by thunder. I don't mind winter but even I'm ready for spring now. It's so nice to see daffodil and bluebells shoots already emerging in the garden.

How lovely to read about your rereading of the Ruth Galloway series. I now feel inspired to finish my first read of the series, this year, I'm on book 14 so just two to read. I also want to catch up with her Harbinder Kaur series and start the new one, the first book of which is out next month I think.

    1. Cath, I'm glad to hear that you are ready for spring too. Daffodil and bluebell shoots - fun! Hope you enjoy those last two Ruth Galloway books. I keep hoping that the author might do another book or two for that series in the future. We'll see.

  2. Hi Kay, I'm with you in being ready for spring to arrive. I live in SE WI and it has been very cold. However, we don't have any snow on the ground at the moment. Very unusual for this time of year. My sister sent a pic of the snow they received in San Antonio. Different kind of winter for a lot of people. Stay warm and enjoy your reading!

    1. Mary, I'm laughing that you guys don't have snow on the ground in Wisconsin and that your sister sent snow pictures from San Antonio. Yes, people in Texas like the idea of snow for playing in, etc., but they don't usually know much about how to deal with it. We do better with thunderstorms, etc. Hope you reading goes well this week!

  3. I can wait a little bit for spring, but I would like to get past this bitter and unusual cold we've had lately! My sister just loaned me a copy of How To Solve Your Own Murder and I'm really looking forward to it!

    1. Yes, I know that various parts of the US have had such cold weather. Hey, hope you enjoy How To Solve Your Own Murder. I'll look for what you think if you decide to share about it. I liked it.

  4. Well, we've been lucky to have fairly mild temps and no rain, but we're due for some later in the week, which is good. We don't want to head into spring and summer with below normal rainfalls.

Once I get caught up on my other reading endeavors, I'm going to return to Elly Griffiths' books. I have a couple in my stacks, but need to get to the library for the ones that precede these.

    Happy Reading!

    1. No, you guys need to catch up on the rain so that the green of your world can flourish. Good luck with getting caught up on your reading plans.

  5. I am enjoying the rain here, although I know for the fire impacted areas, rain is not always welcome--at least not a lot of it at once. So, I feel a little guilty being so happy for it right now. I don't know if I'm quite ready for spring myself but more so because it means my daughter will be promoting out of middle school and she'll be even closer to starting high school. The Ghost Fields sounds really good! I hope you have a good discussion about How To Solve Your Own Murder in your book club next month. I am thinking of starting my mystery book club's February read, The Tainted Cup, today or tomorrow. I originally hoped to read it for the fantasy book club back in September, but they ended up switching books, and so I decided to put off reading it. And now it's the mystery pick! So, it's time to read it. I hope you have a great week, Kay. Happy reading!

    1. Yes, when rain comes after fires it's kind of a good thing, but it can also cause mudslides, etc. A little tough. Wendy, I can't believe that Miss Mouse will be starting high school next year. Our daughter and son-in-law have a niece who is in 8th grade this year and I can't believe how fast she has grown up. I think we'll enjoy talking about How To Solve Your Own Murder. Will need to look up The Tainted Cup to see what the story is there. Good reading to you as well!

  6. It has not been too cold here in Goleta / Santa Barbara but colder than usual. Glen and I celebrated our 45th anniversary last week. We never have done anything big for anniversaries, just go out to eat for dinner which is different for us. We usually do breakfast if we go out.

I have read 5 books now in the Ruth Galloway series. And I hope to read book 6 this year. I have been interested in How to Solve Your Own Murder but I don't have a copy yet so it will be a while. I like the premise and the book cover.

    1. Tracy, happy anniversary to you and your husband! We don't usually make a big deal out of our either, but we almost always go out for dinner. The difference is that in years past it was a 'fancy' place for dinner. These days it's more like 'what's our favorite place' - ha! Hope you get to try these books that I've been reading. Have a good week!

  7. I should try and get caught up in Griffith's Ruth Galloway series. I've read several books in it, but not all of them. And it's been awhile. I'm not even sure where I left off now. :D

    1. Yes, I understand about remembering where you left off in a series. I think that's part of the reason why I like just starting at the beginning again and reading the whole thing. I actually was surprised it had been so long since I read those earlier books and that I hadn't reread them. Really enjoyed my rereads. Have a good week!

  8. Eighth book, wow. I started with The Brothers Karamazov at 900 pages and I am nearly done but although I am reading other books at the same time, I have yet to finish one! I will catch up.

    1. Ti, you've been working on a 'big' book. I used to read more than one book at a time, but these days I don't often do that. Sometimes one on audio and one in print (e-book or actual book). You will catch up I'm sure. Hope you have a nice week!

  9. The snow has been crazy! My dad has a house on the AL coast and sent pictures of his driveway covered in snow. He said the wind was absolutely brutal because it was coming right off the Gulf. I've read a few books by this author but only one in the Ruth Galloway series which is weird because the premise really appeals to me. I've read a number of the ones in the Magician series and enjoyed them all.

    1. Katherine, you've read ones in the Magician series and I still haven't read any of those. I need to do that - ha! I am still intrigued by the new one she's coming out with called Frozen People.

  10. Sounds like you've had a great reading month, Kay. I'm plugging away at my book a week rate, but two were pretty short. Now that we're back to 'normal Florida winter' I'm in no hurry for it to end... especially because of what comes next! Hope you get some relief from the pollen soon.

    1. Thanks for the good wishes about the pollen, JoAnn. It will pass eventually - usually by the end of February. Then I'll be happy and not so itchy in the eye area. Enjoy your 'normal' winter. :-)

  11. I really like the Ruth Galloway series, but I seem to be reading it very slowly. Her Harbinder Kauer series is also good and now I see she's starting a new one with some time travel elements. I'm never going to catch up at this rate! Ha ha.

I also enjoyed HOW TO SOLVE YOUR OWN MURDER and am excited for the sequel.

    1. It's like that with certain authors isn't it? We try to read or at least sample all their choices. I feel that way a bit with Kelley Armstrong.
