Hello book friends! Hope you have all had a good weekend. I've been thinking of everyone that has been affected by fires and winter storms and also those continuing to recover from storms in past months (North Carolina and surrounding). Our area had the small snow event, but areas to the south and west of us had a lot more snow than we did. I couldn't believe some of the pictures I saw of famous places with snow everywhere (Galveston and New Orleans especially). Wow!
I am so ready for spring. I know that some really enjoy the winter weather and things that go along with that. However, I'm not really one of them. I'm always more than ready to get rid of the cedar pollen that continues to blow into our area over and over. I say this every year. Cedar, go away (because it hates me)!! Ha!
OK, now let's talk about what I've been reading so far in January of 2025. Right now, I'm working on my 8th book and enjoying it. It's The Ghost Fields by Elly Griffiths and it's the 7th book in her Ruth Galloway series. I think I mentioned that I was going to do a reread of that 15-book series. Almost halfway done. Yay, me! I have enjoyed all the ones I've revisited. The series begins with The Crossing Places, which I had read a couple of times before. Books 2-6 are ones I hadn't reread at all. It's been fun to rediscover what I loved about them the first time around. The Ghost Fields tells of the discovery of a downed WWII plane with a body inside. Ruth Galloway, a forensic archeologist, determines that the skeleton could not be the pilot and so the task for DI Nelson and his team is to determine who was 'buried' in this way. I had forgotten how much Elly Griffiths adds to each of these books that educates about myth, legend, and archeological procedures, etc. Her husband is an archeologist and she has a ready source for all kinds of info for her books.
The other book I've finished this month is How To Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin. I mentioned recently that this would be our mystery book group selection for February. It's a good one and I look forward to talking about it with my group. I'll try to write a review of it after the discussion (if I remember - ha!). I'm also going to feature the second book in this series in a 'Waiting on Wednesday' post next week. Stay tuned! What have you been reading?
We in the UK are enduring one storm after another at the moment. Last night was wild and woolly and I was even woken up by thunder. I don't mind winter but even I'm ready for spring now. It's so nice to see daffodil and bluebells shoots already emerging in the garden.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to read about your rereading of the Ruth Galloway series. I now feel inspired to finish my first read of the series, this year, I'm on book 14 so just two to read. I also want to catch up with her Harbinder Kaur series and start the new one, the first book of which is out next month I think.
Hi Kay, I'm with you in being ready for spring to arrive. I live in SE WI and it has been very cold. However, we don't have any snow on the ground at the moment. Very unusual for this time of year. My sister sent a pic of the snow they received in San Antonio. Different kind of winter for a lot of people. Stay warm and enjoy your reading!

I can wait a little bit for spring, but I would like to get past this bitter and unusual cold we've had lately! My sister just loaned me a copy of How To Solve Your Own Murder and I'm really looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteWell, we've been lucky to have fairly mild temps and no rain, but we're due for some later in the week, which is good. We don't want to head into spring and summer with below normal rainfalls.
ReplyDeleteOnce I get caught up on my other reading endeavors, I'm going to return to Elly Griffiths' books. I have a couple in my stacks, but need to get to the library for the ones that precede these.
Happy Reading!
I am enjoying the rain here, although I know for the fire impacted areas, rain is not always welcome--at least not a lot of it at once. So, I feel a little guilty being so happy for it right now. I don't know if I'm quite ready for spring myself but more so because it means my daughter will be promoting out of middle school and she'll be even closer to starting high school. The Ghost Fields sounds really good! I hope you have a good discussion about How To Solve Your Own Murder in your book club next month. I am thinking of starting my mystery book club's February read, The Tainted Cup, today or tomorrow. I originally hoped to read it for the fantasy book club back in September, but they ended up switching books, and so I decided to put off reading it. And now it's the mystery pick! So, it's time to read it. I hope you have a great week, Kay. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteIt has not been too cold here in Goleta / Santa Barbara but colder than usual. Glen and I celebrated our 45th anniversary last week. We never have done anything big for anniversaries, just go out to eat for dinner which is different for us. We usually do breakfast if we go out.
ReplyDeleteI have read 5 books now in the Ruth Galloway series. And I hope to read book 6 this year. I have been interested in How to Solve Your Own Murder but I don't have a copy yet so it will be a while. I like the premise and the book cover.
I should try and get caught up in Griffith's Ruth Galloway series. I've read several books in it, but not all of them. And it's been awhile. I'm not even sure where I left off now. :D
