Hello everyone! Hope you have had a nice couple of days after the 'Happy New Year' festivities!
I thought I might share a little about my 2024 reading and then also talk about what I might be reading this next year. Oh, there also will be a post on Monday about what 'My Favorite Mystery Book Group' (we've been meeting since February of 2008!) will be reading and discussing for the first half of this year.
According to my reading journal, I finished 97 books in 2024. I was so happy about that! That is the highest number I've read since 2020! Yay! The last few years have been busy and distracted. Glad this one was a little better in those areas. Still busy - trying not to be so distracted. One of the goals I had for 2024 was to read the entire series by J.D. Robb featuring Eve Dallas and Roarke. There are 59 full-length books at this time and #60 will be coming out in February. Did I make it? Yes, I did. So, 59 of the 97 were in that series. As you probably know, I love mystery series and this is one of my favorites. The first book is Naked In Death and the one published last September is Passions In Death.
Other books that stood out for me are below:
The Turtle House by Amanda Churchill - I led a book discussion of this one in October at the afternoon book group that I attend. It's the author's debut book and I really look forward to seeing what she will write next. Set in the late '90's in Texas and also in Japan before and after WWII, it tells the story of a Japanese war bride and a grandmother and granddaughter. It's based on the author's family and her grandmother. Have you read this? I recommend it.
The Goddess of Shipwrecked Sailors by Skye Alexander - my thoughts here.
The Unquiet Bones by Loreth Anne White - my thoughts here.
The Dark Wives by Ann Cleeves - my thoughts here.
Think that's about all for 2024. I did enjoy many other books, but we'll move on to 2025 plans.
-------------------------------------------------------
As I said above, I'll be sharing what the mystery book group I attend is reading for Jan-Jun of 2025. I do attend an afternoon book group (mystery group is an evening group) as well when I can. I don't always read all the books for that one. That group is reading The Women by Kristin Hannah in April and I want to try it. Also, the May meeting will be 'Books About Books' - don't think I'll have trouble finding any of those.
After doing that big reread of the J.D. Robb books for 2024, I'm thinking of doing a couple of other series catch-ups or complete rereads. I do plan to reread all of Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway books and have already started. I also need to go back and sort of analyze where I am with several other series. I think for a few I'm only a book or two behind. Others more than that. Mostly, I plan to read what 'speaks' to me for 2025. And have one goal - reading 100 books or more this year - ha!! Can I do it? I think so!
Let's all have some fun and meaningful reading in 2025!!!
Good luck with your goals!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shelleyrae! We'll see what 2025 brings....
DeleteWow, 60 books in one series??! That's wild. Did it ever feel tedious reading so many books about the same characters? I know you said above that you love the series. Happy reading in 2025 and good luck on your goals!
ReplyDeleteYes, 60 books - ha! No, it didn't feel tedious to me, but I do love that series and listened to it as well while I was walking/driving in the car, etc. Don't know that I will revisit those books again, but one never knows. Right now, I'm taking myself down the path of another series and am on #2 (only 15 books though). Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI'm in awe of your achievement in rereading all of the In Death series. Well done! I'll look up The Turtle House as I'm intrigued... it's not a subject I know a lot about and I want to read more historicals this year. I'm sure you can get to 100 books this year, I've managed it 3 times I think, you can do it! An Elly Griffiths reread sounds wonderful. I still have a couple more Ruth books to read. She has a new series starting in Feb I think. It's cold case/time travel, which sounds rather interesting. She's such a talented author. Happy New Year, Kay. Looking forward to seeing what you read this year!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cath! I did have fun with JD Robb books. And it's been a while since I read the first Ruth books. I am very much enjoying #2 right now. Do see if you can try The Turtle House. I thought it was quite good.
DeleteWow, what an accomplishment re-reading the J.D. Robb series! I've not read any of those. The number is kind of daunting. I have a few series I'd like to catch up with.
ReplyDeleteMary @Bookfan
Yes, the number of JD Robb books are a lot now, but I definitely had a good time. I love series and so I guess it's not surprising that I turn to those over and over.
DeleteI am so impressed that you read all 60 books in a series! And impressed that there is a series with 60 books! It sounds heavenly because when I find a series I really like, I never want it to end.
ReplyDeleteHooray for your great year of reading, Kay! And what a great accomplishment to read all of the JD Robb books in that series. I'm still sad that I finished all of Deborah Crombie's and Susan Hill's. I wonder if they will write any more... But on to other authors and series. This month I'll dive into CJ Box and William Kent Krueger's books. Good luck with your goals for 2025! I'm rooting for you to hit 100 books. :)
ReplyDeleteYou had a great reading year, Kay! Way to go on getting through all the In Death books! I prefer the audio, but the library doesn't carry them that way so I am going to have to read the e-versions. Even those, I am finding, are hard to come by in my library system.
ReplyDeleteI had hoped to get to the The Turtle House this past year, but it didn't work out. I love that cover. I am glad to see you liked it.
I look forward to reading about your mystery club picks this year. I am going to join the one at the local indie store--although not sure I will be able to make all the meetings. The January and February picks are both books I've been really wanting to read and so I am excited about getting to those.
I hope you have a Happy New Year!
