Waiting on Wednesday - The Dark Angel

I'm posting a 'soon to be released' book on Wednesdays.  These will always be books that I am particularly looking forward to.  I've edited this to link up to 'Can't-Wait Wednesday' hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings.  I'll plan to take part in that each week.  Glad to have a place again to 'tie up'!

The book I've chosen for this week is the 10th book in one of my favorite series - Elly Griffiths' mysteries featuring Ruth Galloway.  I am always delighted to know that there will be another visit with Ruth and Nelson, Cathbad and wee Kate, and all the other characters that have become like family to each other and to the readers.  We'll travel to Italy for this story, and I'll see if I can wait for the US publication date.  It comes out in the UK on February 8th - sigh!  This week's book:

Publication Date:  May 15th

It’s not every day that you’re summoned to the Italian countryside on business, so when archaeologist Angelo Morelli asks for Ruth Galloway’s help identifying bones found in the tiny hilltop town of Fontana Liri, she jumps at the chance to go, bringing her daughter along with her for a working vacation. Upon arriving, she begins to hear murmurs of Fontana Liri’s strong resistance movement during World War II and senses the townspeople are dancing around a deeply buried secret. But how could that be connected to the ancient remains she’s been studying?

Ruth is just beginning to get her footing in the dig when she’s thrown off-guard by the appearance of DCI Nelson. And when Ruth’s findings lead them to a modern-day murder, their holidays are both turned upside down, and they race to find out what darkness is lurking in this seemingly picturesque town.

  1. This sounds sooo intriguing, linking the remains and the history and secrets of the town. This is one I'd like to start now, but from the blurb, I suspect that it's best to start at the beginning?

    1. It would likely be a good idea to try at least the first book in the series, Verushka. It's called THE CROSSING PLACES and it sets the characters up. It's a great series - always history and mystery.

  3. Sounds like a good installment but I've not read any of this series and this is #10...I'd have a hard time catching up. Hope you love it!

    1. I know what you mean, Barb. There are so many series that I'd like to read and haven't begun yet. I've tried to cull them down to a few that I 'always' keep current. But, if I only had 24 more hours in every day. LOL

    1. Yes, I remember that the series has been crossed off your list. Each of us has our own 'cross off' line - several authors have hit mine - Patricia Cornwell, for instance. But, I suspect I'll enjoy it. ;-)

  8. I can't believe we're already at book #10. In some ways I feel like we just started this series but then I think of how much has happened. I almost can't imagine Ruth & Nelson anywhere other than the UK so it'll be interesting to see them out of their element. Can't wait for this one!

    1. I know that contemplating starting a new series that already has 10 books is a bit daunting, but...I think sometimes at least reading the first book is possible.

    1. Yes, sometimes it's nice when a series takes the characters to another location. Then again - sometimes I don't like those as well. We'll see how it goes.

  22. I don't usually read mysteries, but this one sounds very intriguing, what with the Italian setting and the WWII angle! Although I'd never heard of this one before, now I'm adding it to my Goodreads shelves! Thanks for sharing!! <3 <3

Also, thanks for commenting on my "Can't Wait Wednesday" post!! <3 :)

    1. This whole series is interesting because Ruth is a forensic archaeologist. Each book has tales of old, things discovered, things we learn as readers.

  23. This sounds wonderful! I do enjoy a good mystery and I'm intrigued by the WWII connection and Fontana Liri’s resistance movement, and the idea that the people there are now keeping some kind of secret that ties into what Ruth's dig. I had never heard of this series before but you definitely have me curious now. Great pick!

    1. Suzanne, you don't need to read the whole series, but the first book, THE CROSSING PLACES, would be helpful with the characters.

    1. The books are set normally in the Norwich area of England. Ruth lives on a salt marsh. However, this one will be fun with the Italian angle.
