Wishing everyone a very Happy Valentine's Day!
I was at a meeting earlier this week and was talking with a friend there who revealed that she'd never seen the movie of The Princess Bride! I said - oh, you must see it - it's very romantic. Another friend added - no, it's very funny. The first friend then asked 'what's it about?'. Well, we told her, it's the story of Buttercup and her Westley, but they are not the only romantic ones. There's also Miracle Max and his Valerie. I said there are swords and adventures and pirates and giants and death (or maybe only 'mostly dead') and love of a grandfather for his grandson. There is 'twue wuv'! So, my answer to the 'favorite romantic movie' question, at least for today, The Princess Bride!
Tell me some of your favorite romantic movies for Valentine's Day!
Miracle Max and Valerie |
Westley and Buttercup |
Sleepless in Seattle & You've Got Mail (Meg Ryan), The Lake House & While You Were Sleeping(Sandra Bullock), The Incredible Journey & Born Free (for animal love), Once Around & Mr. Holland's Opus(Richard Dreyfus, I know, right, lol?)... Probably one of the few that made me cry was Brokeback Mountain-- there will be those reading this who don't agree on this one-- but I'm still mentioning it.
ReplyDeleteAlso Beauty and the Beast (in any format). Titanic (Kate Winslet) & Ghost (Demi Moore). My youngest likes Love, Actually, Breakfast at Tiffany's, & The Notebook (movie, not book)... My parents loved Casablanca... I hope no one mentions Fifty Shades....
I'm running out of steam without caffeine so far, hmm. Never saw Princess Bride-- should I watch first or read first?
I'm not a romantic person, well not so much for the books or movies, so this is what I thought of off hand!
Rita, you've got a great list here - and without coffee? Amazing! Ha! No, no '50 anything', but like your youngest, I like Love, Actually as well. As to read or watch, I've never read the book. I've heard it's very good. I've only watched the movie like a zillion times. Your choice.
Delete:) The effect this movie has had is pretty amazing. It is rare to find someone who doesn't recognize the quotes and characters, and it is so very re-watchable!
ReplyDeleteYou are right about the quotes - so many, so very many. Ha!
DeleteWhen Harry Met Sally!
ReplyDeleteIt's been years since I watched that one. And I still laugh at 'I want what she's having!'. LOL
DeleteWhile You Were Sleeping is probably my favorite romantic movie. It's funny and upbeat and swoony. I love it!
ReplyDeleteYes, I love that one too. Another I've seen like a zillion times.
DeleteBridges of Madison County by far; that movie gets to me everytime!
ReplyDeleteDo you know I've never seen that one? Not sure it would be one my husband would like, but I should watch it sometime when he's out of pocket.
DeleteI've not seen Princess Bride either. I have tried sooooo many times but lose interest after the first half hour.
ReplyDeleteFave romantic movies:
Tootsie (odd but so good)
Only You (Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei version)
Notting Hill
Dirty Dancing
OK, well, I guess it's not for everyone. However, you have others - I love Only You and Dirty Dancing. It was so funny to see Robert and Marisa sitting in the same room in a recent Marvel movie - can't think if it was a Captain America or Avengers. Anyway, she plays Spiderman's Aunt May and he is, of course, IronMan. All I can say is Aunt May has certainly gotten younger. Oh, and Dirty Dancing makes me cry...
DeleteI did not see Princess Bride until a few years ago and loved it. It is a very fun movie. Have you read the book? I read the book first and liked it a lot.
ReplyDeleteI used to love When Harry Met Sally but watched it too many times. Notting Hill was also very romantic. Casablanca is my favorite movie of all time but not because of the romance.
Happy Valentines Day to you. My husband and I don't do Valentine's Day although we had a few romantic ones in the early days. Forty years ago.
No, I have not read the book. I guess I need to, though I wonder if it would suffer because I love the movie so much. We don't do a lot on Valentine's Day, but we did get engaged on that day 39 years ago. So...it's special.
DeleteHands down, You've Got Mail. I love both Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks and think this one is much better than Sleepless in Seattle. When Harry Met Sally is also a favorite, as is Bridges of Madison County.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that you're not voting for 'twue wuv', Les!! Ha! I love You've Got Mail too.
DeleteWhile You Were Sleeping is my favorite romantic movie. :)
ReplyDeleteLark, it is indeed a good one!
DeleteMy favourites are Love Actually and You've Got mail
ReplyDeleteThose are both good ones!
DeleteI'm not a big rom-com fan, but I adore some of the Jane Austen movies! Her romances are so good and the characters so funny. Emma is probably my favourite :)
ReplyDeleteAmy @ A Magical World of Words
I love Jane Austen as well. I'm very partial to Sense and Sensibility, but I like Emma very much too.
DeleteThe Princess Bride is probably my favorite as well. I've watched a decent amount of romantic comedies over the years but none are even in the same ballpark.
ReplyDeleteWell, as I said, The Princess Bride the day I wrote the post. Might be another one today - ha!
DeleteI've never actually seen The Princess Bride! I think Love Actually is my favorite romantic movie. I love the different sub-plots and how they all come together!
ReplyDeleteYes, Love Actually is very good and I also love the music. :-)
DeleteThe first couple times I saw The Princess Bride I didn't like it. It is one of my husband's favorite movies though and so we've seen it a lot. And it grew on me after awhile. I really like it now. I absolutely loved the book, and I think that helped with my appreciation for the movie.
ReplyDeleteWhile You Were Sleeping is my favorite romantic movie--although I think of it more as a Christmas movie than a Valentine's Day movie. Actually, I think more of Christmas when I think of romantic movies . . . I blame Hallmark.
Ha! I think Hallmark has a lot to do with romantic movies and also those cozy mystery movies.
DeletePrincess Bride is my favorite, too!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're a fan, Robin.
DeleteI hope you and your husband had a wonderful Valentine's day. Some of my favorites are Bridget Jones's Diary, Love Actually and Pride & Prejudice. Yes, the common denominator is Colin Firth! haha...
ReplyDeleteOh, those are all good, Iliana. Yes, indeed. ;-)
DeleteLike Wendy, it took me a while to appreciate The Princess Bride. I love While You Were Sleeping, When Harry Met Sally, Ever After, Breakfast at Tiffany's...
ReplyDeleteLots of good movies mentioned, Stacy. I'm glad many of us share favorites.
DeleteIt's funny because as I was thinking of this I realized that many of the movies I used to find romantic I'm not finding as romantic these days, in light of my growing angry feminist persona. I can't stop loving those movies but my views about them have certainly changed. I do love the Keira Knightley Pride & Prejudice, Princess Bride, You've Got Mail, and Franco Zefferelli's Romeo & Juliet, and 10 Things I Hate About You.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of our attitudes have altered a bit these days. However, several of these movies certainly include strong women. :-)
