'Waiting on Wednesday' is an event where I feature an upcoming book that I am extra excited about. I used to do this in the past and am making it a priority to do again. Seriously, who among us doesn't have a book or two or twenty that we are excited about reading? Plus, it lets us 'spread the word' about authors and series that we personally enjoy.
This week's book I want to mention is the third in Sarah Pearse's series featuring Detective Elin Warner. I have read the previous two books and enjoyed both. The first one, The Sanatorium, is set in the Swiss Alps at a hotel that was once a sanatorium. The second book, The Retreat, takes place on an island off the coast of England and involves a wellness retreat. The new book, which will be out next month, takes place at a Portuguese national park. As you can probably surmise, setting plays a big part in these books. Have you tried this series or might this encourage you to look for these books? Do tell!

Detective Elin Warner unravels the mystery behind the disappearance of a young woman in a propulsive new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Sanatorium
Since the dark events that scarred her childhood, Kier Templer escaped her hometown to live life on the road. She and her twin have never lost contact until, on a trip to a Portuguese national park, Kier vanishes without a trace.
Detective Elin Warner arrives in the same park ready to immerse herself in its vast wilderness – only to hear about Kier’s disappearance, and discover a disturbing map she left behind. The few strangers at an isolated campsite close ranks against Elin’s questions, and the park’s wild beauty starts to turn sinister.
Elin must untangle the clues to find out what really happened to Kier. But when you follow a trail, you have to be careful to watch your back...
Sarah Pearse brilliantly introduced readers to Elin Warner in The Sanatorium, with her exploits continuing in The Retreat; here, the series concludes with The Wilds, where the unanswered questions plaguing Elin are finally resolved.
I'm not familiar with this author but this sounds like a good series. Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks, Mary. I hope I will as well.
DeleteI read The Sanatorium and didn't love it. I had some issues with the plotting, and really hated the epilogue. But I wouldn't mind giving this one a try...mostly for that setting.
ReplyDeleteI honestly can't remember a huge amount about The Sanatorium, but I did like The Retreat. I noticed that the blurb above said 'the series concludes'....maybe this one is the end?
DeleteIt sounds like this series takes place in vacation spots! Maybe not the most ideal given the books' premises. Haha. This sounds like a great series, Kay. I hope you enjoy this latest installment!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Wendy! Yes, I agree about the vacation spots setting. In the first book, as I recall, the protagonist was going to her brother's wedding and then things happened. Hope she does well in this new one.
DeleteI've got the first one tucked away on my Kindle. Must. Read. Faster.
ReplyDeleteCan we read faster? Ha! Maybe. If you do try it, I hope it works for you. If not, you won't run out of other books to try. LOL
DeleteI read The Sanitorium and didn't realize it was a series!
ReplyDeleteAngela, it's a series, but kind of one of those loosely defined series. Anyway, The Retreat is the 2nd and then this one is the 3rd.
DeleteI liked The Sanitorium and either didn't know or forgot there were two more books. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely hard to keep up with all the series, right? LOL
DeleteSo this is the final book with Erin? All the settings are spooky and seem good. I'm tempted to read these and see what's resolved at the end with Erin.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like it might be the final one since that blurb above says 'the series concludes' - guess we'll see. :-)
DeleteI'm really curious about this one. I had mixed feelings about The Santatorium but this one looks good and the second one did as well. I hope you read it so I can see what you think!
ReplyDeleteKatherine, I'm planning on reading it to see how it goes for me. After reading some of the thoughts above, I kind of feel like I want to reread The Sanatorium first. We'll see.
DeleteI was not crazy about The Sanitorium, so I didn't continue the series. However, The Wilds sounds pretty good! I'm intrigued by the Portuguese national park setting.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm thinking I'll go back and revisit The Sanitorium. I honestly can't remember a bunch of specifics about that one. More to come on this I suspect. LOL
